CD Description
After moving their sound from a more grunge heavy style to this album's more emo inflected hardcore style the band recorded this (their debut) with legendary punk figure John Feldman (Goldfinger, The Used etc). The band capture the early 2000 punk sound of merging metallic guitars with pop-punk andgrunge's strained vocals. This album was launched using oneof the most downloaded singles ever, 'Until The Day I Die'.

Brand New/Moneen/Funeral For A Friend
Wat can i say, this album is one of many kinds. Emo at the moment is exploding, so many bands producing some fantastic music. SOTY are just incredible, thanks to a few clicks around the Linkin Park, i found myself jumping around to 'Until The Day I Die' which was being previewed on the site. From then on i was hooked, i had to have this album, it just sounded so imense. Wel im not disapponted, the album is incrdible, track after track, it just gets better. I hope emo can carry on for a few more years so we can recieve bands like SOTY. If u r also into this kind of music, i recommend Brand New and Moneen. Happy listening and ROCK ON!!!!
Adds nothing new to the emo mix
Now I'm encouraging people to shy away from this record. Before I rant, I want to apologise to 'Story Of The Year' fans because this album is not bad. In the past five years, post-hardcore/emo has reached its apex as literally hundreds of records are churned out by giant companies profiting from this music trend. I love emo and it's not a dirty word (!) but because theres a vast array from bands in the scene, standards and expectations in production must be higher. If we compared 'Story of the Year' to 'The Used' and hypothetically, both debut records had a similar release date, I would rate them quite equally. Personally, I don't think SOTY add anything innovative to the mix. Instead, I recommend the likes of Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, Piebald, Atom & His Package, Desaparecidos and Biffy Clyro for bands that transcend their genre and make mind-blowing, original music. *bling*
Damn, this CD is good!
"Story of the year" are a new sensation to me. After buying there album I was hooked to nearly every song.
And the hero will drown: As others mention, yes it is a good opener. Lots of screams and vocals. 5/5
Until the day I die: What can I say? The best song on the album. Hooked first time I heard it. Dead catchy. Still some hard stuff and shouting, but it almost sounds a bit sad. 5/5
Anthem of our dying day: A bit more slower now, starts off slow, but it then gets loud out of nowhere. Great song. 5/5
In the shadows: This is one of the harder songs. Lots more screams, but it isn't a favourite. 4/5
Dive right in: Slower, but slightly worse, I didn't like this one very much. 3/5
Swallow the knife: Very dark and slow. But I quite liked it. 4/5
Burning years: One of my least favourite songs, dark and fast. Also quite hard. But it sounds too much like "And the hero..." 3/5
Page avenue: A lot of people don't like this one, but I do. It's enjoyable. The only problem is that it sounds similar to another famous song. 5/5
Sidewalks: Probably the slowest song on the album, but it's another good one. Very peaceful and beautiful acoustic playing. 4/5
Divide and conquer: Very weak... I don't like it at all. 2/5
Razorblades: Another favourite. It's a bit more like a normal rock song, but I love it. 5/5
Falling down: Wow! This is a good song. Big shouts, fast drum and guitar playing. Very enjoyable.
So, that's all the songs, some good, some not so good. They all start off very hard, but they calm down a bit more. Any casual rock fan will probably like it.
