So good, I bought it twice
Anti virus software is soooo de-rigeur these days that its difficult to distinguish the merits of 1 versus another.
As a long standing user of computers (and AV software) I've pretty much used them all. The opportunity to get my hands on BitDefenders software came and I grabbed it with relish. Teh software I tried is for windows, though they do have other platforms covered also. It installed easily and without drama, the installation wizard ask you simple questions in plain English and I was protected within about 8 minutes.
I left the computer overnight to perform a scan of my machine, you can ignore this, BitDefenders system will scan files as you access them and perform background scans at pre-determined intervals. Again, this is pretty standard stuff.
What I was REALLY pleased about was how happy the software was to sit in the background and not be noticed. It alerts you to a problem when it needs to and doesn't just blab techno speak at you EVERYTIME a registry key is changed (like Kaspersky does).
The software did in fact find a couple of viruses, which was surprising as I keep a pretty clean system, I called the tech support team and a very helpful young chap explained what had occurred, how i was likely infected and what the payload of the virus in question was: all for free. Again this is night and day compared to calls I've made to other AV companies tech support teams (again, Kaspersky is by far the worst here).
So, this software is easy to install, sits in the background and won't distract you from your tasks at hand and when you do end up in the proverbial , there's really good guys on the end of the phone to help you out. I was so happy, I even bought a copy for my Dad!
Good security suite
This product comes with:
Antivirus
Antispyware
Identity and fraud protection
Instant messaging encryption
Antispam
Firewall
Parental control
This means everything you need to stay safe on the internet is provided in one product. It comes with 3 PC protection, which means it is great if you have multiple machines in the house. Another advantage is that it runs on Windows 7 (also Windows XP and Windows Vista too). Another benefit is that it takes up much less system resources than other similar products, meaning that you machine does not slow down much when the suite is installed and running. Updates to the product are regular and work as expected.
During the time I have had this installed I've had no problems with it, and would certainly recommend it to others, especially if you have a few machines to protect and want an all in one solution.
As complete and solid a package as you could wish for
I've reviewed a few of these products for Amazon now, and am quite happy to sandbox test them. BitDefender, however, is one I was happy to put onto my main workstation immediately as it is a product I was slightly familiar with due to a number of glowing reports I'd come across in the past. The awards on the package case confirm this.
It is about as complete a set of internet tools as you could wish for. Installation is simple, the product even opening the CD drawer for you so that you can eject the disk and reboot! On restarting the PC (after a very brisk install) you then move to registration and configuration. These steps are well designed with particular emphasis on the needs of gamers and parents looking to install parental controls. Firewall, antivirus, antiphishing and system strengths are all catered for, with the product identifying outdated applications and suggesting you update items like messaging and browsers to their latest versions.
The software itself is commendably low load on the system; much less than the bloatware of the big name applications. An antiphishing button will also be added to your browser by default but is easily hidden if you don't want this showing. What is excellent is that the suite can be fine-tuned to cater for laptop users who want a better battery life, again with one click to set certain features to optimise for usage when not on mains power. Once installed and updated the software robustly scans and detects vulnerabilities of all kinds, and if you have a little ability is easily configured to how you want it to run. The completeness factor is definitely there as a note concerning a piece of outdated software on your system will be one-click linked to the download page of that supplier, to facilitate easy updating.
It's a very polished, easy to install and easy to manage application. There isn't anything negative I can find about it so far, so for a user wanting total protection and a full suite of internet/system security tools it is extraordinary good value. Five star product in every way.
