    good steamer but ...4
This is a good steamer but it does have a couple of faults.

On the good side you don't have to use it for cooking just rice; it is great for such as fish and vegetables as well.

It has indicator lights to tell you which mode it is operating on - cook or keep warm (it is a good idea to check the setting which you have the cooker on before you walk out of the kitchen - excuse my embarrassment).

The steamer consists of: the steamer itself; tempered glass lid; an internal steam tray; "non-stick" removable bowl; single-person-measure measuring bowl and a spatula.

The problems start to arise when you are cooking the rice in the steamer.

Firstly, the lid does not fit properly - which means that if you are cooking a lot of rice then you will find that the liquid will splatter the surrounding work surfaces (it is a sticky white rice flour gloop that no amount of pre-washing of the rice will stop). If cooking the full 10 portion amount then this can become extremely messy. Anything from 5 portions onward seems to have the splatter problem.

The measuring bowl is a single portion only measure - if you are making more than just a couple of portions then you need to measure the rice into a separate bowl, just in case you lose count (if the phone rings or someone comes to the door it is very easy to forget where you were). Also if you are measuring a lot of portions then it can become tedious to keep measuring in singles. I would have liked at least a 2 person measure as well.

The steamer itself is too big for just a single serving - I tend to cook extra and then use the left over rice for such as fried rice, or savoury rice cakes.

There have been occasions where all the rice isn't cooked properly. A problem associated with more than 4 portions. Even when the rice is evenly spread the problem of undercooking still occurs.

I have also found that the rice tends to stick to the so-called non-stick cooking bowl.

I believe that some of the cooking problems are associated with the water amounts recommended and the fact that the lid doesn't fit properly, so letting too much steam out and reducing the cooking water available. I have adjusted the water levels and it seems to help.

Cooking times for rice are the same as Uncle Ben's boil in the bag - so there is no real advantage over an ordinary pan. However, when it does cook the rice properly, you get a lovely fluffy rice to serve and eat. It does produce delicious mixed steamed rice and vegetables that can be served with chicken or fish.

    Perfect rice everytime5
I am really pleased with this rice cooker. It's very simple to use, basically you measure out how many cups of rice you want ie 1 cup per person, add the equivalent in water switch it on and wait about 10 mins and voila, perfect rice. You can also put your rice on to cook, leave it and then it will switch over to the keep warm function when it is ready so it doesn't burn, so if you need to pop out for an hour or so you can put it on before you leave and it is ready and waiting when you get back. I haven't really had any problems with it overflowing or leaving a starchy mess either...I usually only cook up to about 3 cups worth so maybe the problems occur if you cook larger quantities.

    Very pleased4
I have had lots of prefect rice from this and steamed veggies too. I have had it now for a year and I am going to buy my mum one for christmas. Be gentle with the non-stick bowl though,Breville RC3 Family Rice Cooker & Steamer 1.8L and always use the spoon they provide you with, otherwise you scratch it.
