these are not the original games!
This game really sucks. These games are not the original we used to play. They've been modernized and even the scores are modern. If I only had know before I'd never bought it. Taito Legends or Capcom Collection is how these compilations should be done.
Oh dear...... sega what have you done?
All I can say is Sega should be ashamed, not so much the games or the collection, it is slightly entertaining hence the one star, and can be picked up for less than a tenner which is ok. But dont bother these games were classics the way they were and didnt need these polished semi 3D poor remakes, Sega should have just put the original versions on this comp along with a few more eg streets of rage, vectorman, strider to name a few, but they'll probably save those for classics and rehash them with "3D graphics"....Leave the classics the way they're supposed to be, Classic! Buy Capcom Classics instead!
This could have been so much better.
What better way to spend the weekend, than with a collection of some of Sega's finest work on one disc. Yes, thats exactly what i thought until i got the game. Its OK in some places, but in others, it isn't that great.
The main reasons to buy this are "Golden Axe," an excellent scrolling fighting game from the Mega Drive era. It was one or two player, has a variety of enemies, was quick action pace, reasonably difficult, and had incredibly detailed graphics. This "version," is more of a perversion. In a futile attempt to make it 3D (why does it have to be?) the detail has been lost. I can't be any more blunt. Add to that the fact it is INCREDIBLY EASY TO COMPLETE-easily doable on a first attempt, and only half an hour long, and you'll see why it isn't great. Fortunately, they added an extra level at the end-an extra five mintues! Score 2/5
However, other games, such as "Fantasy Zone" redeem it, with a wide range of unlockables, including artwork of the various creatures that inhabit the many works. It is still a work of art, being able to control a craft taking out mysterious, weird and wonderful enemies in a number of very different worlds and the bosses are brilliant. A two player mode would have been nice though. 5/5
Outrun has fortunately improved with a tweak to the graphics. It still has the same cool tracks and the great sense of freedom from the branching system which allows you to choose the difficulty (go left for easy, right for more challanging) at the end of each section. Being able to drive the ferarri is excellent too. 5/5
Space Harrier, i was thankful that this was easier-this was far too hard on the mega drive. You are able to fly and run along a number of worlds which aren't entirely different shooting anything that comes near you with some great bosses. This is OK, but there isn't much else to it. At least the music was cool. 3/5.
Virtua Racer. What is this abomination. An excellent first attempt at a 3D racer, now it just looks like your racing a lego set around a huge selection of courses-i.e. 3. However, the added modes and the grand prix mode give it some life. Another car to choose from would have been a welcome addition, and why did they get rid of those sheep from the original! A classic, yes at the time, but now, outrun shows its superiority. 3/5.
The Bonanza brothers. Hide, run, shoot steal. I loathed this game at the time, it was quick, action packed, and had a puzzle mode too, but there wasn't enough detail to really impress me. I suppose if you like platformers which involve shooting and ducking lots you'll like this. 3/5.
They have also included Monaco GP and columns, racing and a tetris clone (dropping coloured blocks into the right places to continue and built points,) which are OK games, but certainly not enough to push this over the edge. What they did to Golden Axe was unforgivable too. Rumour has it the second will have the three streets of rage games on it too-hopefully they wont do ANYTHING to change these. For those who like to remember the good old days, and a fine selection of games, i recommend, but for most-there are far better games on the market.
