Films I've seen at the cinema in 2009 (Work in progress)
The Spirit [DVD] [2008]The Spirit [DVD] [2008]
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £2.70
Oh Dear! The first bad movie of the year is just that. Confusing and messy with dialogue and character names that would shame a "Carry On" movie.
Defiance [DVD] [2008]Defiance [DVD] [2008]
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £3.42
007 shows that he's a decent actor in this entertaining true story of the brothers who rescued their fellow Jews from certain death at the hands of the Nazi's.
Valkyrie [DVD] [2008]Valkyrie [DVD] [2008]
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £3.99
What's this, Brit luvvies dressed as Nazi's looking on as Tom Cruise tries to kill Blakey from "On the Buses"? Well yes, and fascinating it is too. Worth a look
Knowing [DVD] [2009]Knowing [DVD] [2009]
Buy new: £7.98 / Used from: £5.48
Although this got a critical mauling, as a film to see on a night out it really Isn't that bad. Plenty of mystery and a few chills and some great set pieces, although it does have Nic Cage.
The Damned United [DVD] [2009]The Damned United [DVD] [2009]
Buy new: £4.98 / Used from: £3.99
Sheen is truly brilliant as the great man, in this lighter version of the equally excellent but controversial novel. Not one of the best films about Cloughie, but certainly in the top one.
Star Trek XI (2-Disc Edition) with Free Comic Book (Exclusive to Amazon.co.uk) [DVD]Star Trek XI (2-Disc Edition) with Free Comic Book (Exclusive to Amazon.co.uk) [DVD]
Buy new: £14.98
Fire up the dilithium crystals and set phasers to stun(ning). The creaky old franchise gets an exciting and modern makeover from Mr. Lost. Just don't be distracted by Nimoy's teeth.
Angels and Demons [DVD] [2009]Angels and Demons [DVD] [2009]
Buy new: £5.98 / Used from: £4.59
If you've read the book, you'll know roughly what to expect. Very much movie making by numbers. Enjoyable enough but a bit daft.
Night At The Museum 2: Battle Of The Smithsonian [DVD] [2009]Night At The Museum 2: Battle Of The Smithsonian [DVD] [2009]
Buy new: £11.98 / Used from: £9.00
Much as I enjoyed the first one, there was just about enough plot to sustain it. This sequel is both un-necessary and boring apart from the last 20 mins. Coogan made me laugh though
Terminator Salvation [DVD] [2009]Terminator Salvation [DVD] [2009]
Buy new: £9.98 / Used from: £9.48
One of the loudest films I've ever heard, earplugs should be free at every screening. Critically panned, and while it's no classic and seems to be a collection of bits of different movies, it's okay.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2-Disc) Special Edition [DVD] [2009]Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2-Disc) Special Edition [DVD] [2009]
Buy new: £12.98
Another summer, yet another sequel. If you enjoyed the first one ( like I did) then you'll enjoy this.
Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince [DVD] [2009]Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince [DVD] [2009]
Buy new: £9.98 / Used from: £8.39
The world's oldest schoolboy wizard returns in what is obviously a slot filler leading up to the concluding events. Brilliant to look at, just a bit slow although Severus Rickman is fantastic .
Moon [DVD] [2009]Moon [DVD] [2009]
Buy new: £9.98 / Used from: £9.00
Beautifully filmed and directed, this debut feature from Son of Bowie is a refreshing and thoughtful alternative to the mainstream dross on offer.
G.I. Joe - The Rise Of Cobra [DVD] [2009]G.I. Joe - The Rise Of Cobra [DVD] [2009]
Buy new: £9.98 / Used from: £9.00
Corny dialogue and a plot a 2 year old could follow easily, doesn't detract from the fact that this CGI-heavy blockbuster is loads of fun. Ecclestone's accent isn't though.
District 9 [DVD] [2009]District 9 [DVD] [2009]
Buy new: £9.98 / Used from: £9.48
Although different, this isn't the modern classic I thought it was going to be. The hand-held camera work adds a bit too much realism to the uncomfortable racial segregation story here.
Surrogates [DVD] [2009]Surrogates [DVD] [2009]
Buy new: £11.99
Oldie action man Willis uses his younger handsome synthetic "surrogate" to solve a murder in this " I Robot" clone. No Oscar winner but not bad.
Triangle [DVD] [2009]Triangle [DVD] [2009]
Buy new: £10.98
Aussie George stars in this low budget but creepy déjà-vu chiller, about friends lost at sea. They are "rescued" by another boat but is it in another time? One of the years top films for me.
A Christmas Carol 3D [DVD]A Christmas Carol 3D [DVD]
Everyone knows this classic Dickens morality Christmas tale, so despite excellent capture-motion and a hyperactive Carrey, is no better than any other version (Muppets included).
Sherlock Holmes [DVD] [2009]Sherlock Holmes [DVD] [2009]
Good actor though Downey Jr is, he is the wrong one to play Holmes. This looks great but is a bit underwhelming.
