The way manuals should be4
Most manuals - even for expensive products - explains things with: Turn dial A to produce effect B...and mostly leaves me with the question: Why would I want effect B? This guide is everything the manual should have been. Its detailed and it explains exactly what happens when you start messing around with all the knobs and levers - and suggest what precise settings matches 1D Mark III best. I have recommended the series to several friends with DSLR.

Good guide3
Its a good guide to the camera - but then so is the Canon manual. I'm undecided on the value of this book, hence my mid-star rating. It really isn't a heck of a lot more than a manual in my opinion, but then the 1D MkIII is a beast of a camera so perhaps thats what it needs. Do not buy this if you are a beginner to photography - but then again I would say the same for the camera. Would I buy it again? Probably - but mainly because I dont like to ruin my manuals by taking them everywhere with me. This book I can do that with and be happy.

Not very useful !1
I was using a EOS 30D before buying my 1DmkIII and I was thus already familiar with Canon EOS camera. But 1DmkIII has so much settings that I was not sure to optimize these settings for motor sport photography.

So I bought this book to have more informations than the ones in the Canon 1DmkIII manual.

Unfortunatly, This is what I found in this book :
- general informations about digital photography (not needed for a 1DmkIII owner !)
- how to use all the buttons : useful...but not more than the Canon user manual !
- some informations about white balance and metering : yes, it can help.
- how to use the 1DmkIII menu : everything is also explain in the Canon manual !
- using flash : interesting if you don't know what is an external flash !!
- general information about lenses and accessories : completely useless
- last but not least : camera to computer (what a complex operation !!)

Illustrating a camera book with black and white pictures is a bad choice.

In other words : keep your money !

I am a beginner with the mkIII and I read two times my Canon manual before I read this book : it is enough because this book added nothing to my knowledge of the mkIII.

Technical informations (I found that in the user manual) must not be the main part of the book.

I was looking for some advices, some tips. For example, how to optimize autofocus (a lot of settings on 1DmkIII) in differents "action" situations like motosport or pingpong or polo or swimming.

This camera is a high level sport camera, the book has to be a high level sport adviser.

Users of 1DmkIII do not need a second user book but informations to optimize their new camera for real life situations. The aim is to be quickly ready for shooting without spending hours of testing the numerous functions to get the best of this great camera.
