Manufacturer's Description
This tele extender can be used with fixed focal length lenses 135mm and longer (except the 135mm f/2.8 Softfocus lens), and the EF 70-200 f/2.8L, 70-200 f/2.8L IS, 70-200 f/4.0L, and 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS zoom lenses. Superb optically, it preserves the image quality of the lens it's mounted to and multiplies its focal length 1.4x. Effective aperture is reduced by one f-stop; autofocus is possible on any EOS camera when combined with a lens having an f/4 or faster maximum aperture. The version II maintains the outstanding optics of the previous version, and adds enhanced weather- resistant construction, and improved anti-reflective surfaces in the barrel.

Very good - best with IS lenses
It does what it says on the box - extends the focal length by 1.4!
I use it with a Canon 400D and a Canon 70-200 F4L, so it extends the range to 280 at F5.6, which isn't bad at all. You can't really tell there's extra glass in the way either, which is impressive especially given how good the Canon L lens is.
The only problem is that without an image stabilised lens, it is pushing the ability to take a steady shot hand-held, especially if you are on relatively slow shutter speeds. In mediocre light I sometimes find that sports photos are better taken without the extender and then cropped rather than with the extender. It isn't a problem in good light or if you are using a rest. The real answer, of course is to get an IS lens. Speaking of which - not all lens fit the extender - you need to check first that whatever lens you have does work with it.
Canon 14XEF II 1.4x Extender
Neat little way of boosting the range of your L-glass. I've actually owned the 2x Extender as well and to be honest never really got on with that. I had sharpness issues and focusing problems, which I seem to be free of with the 1.4.
Attach it to a 300 f/2.8 or a 70-200 f/2.8 and you don't really loose much, if anything, especially on a tripod. If you want added reach on something large and expensive like Canon's range of super telephoto lenses, this is a cheap way of not having to spend a couple of grand more on more expensive glass. On my 300 f/2.8 it makes it a 420mm f/4, which as I said on a tripod, has virtually no noticeable loss in apparent sharpness, and not much in aperture to boot. It weighs virtually nothing as well, meaning you simply won't notice it added to your camera bag.
