Quality
I have owned my old FM Roberts radio for many years and it is still giving sterling service, so when I wanted a small portable DAB radio I was only ever going to buy a Roberts for that reason. Like the previous reviewer I have a bulky mains only radio which is connected to my Hi Fi, I find the reception on the 49 far superior. I have bought very high amp hour rechargeables for it and have run it overnight when at work before they went down, so perhaps the previous reviewer may have faulty batteries. The charging feature is not found on cheaper radios. You can buy other makes of DAB cheaper with stereo speakers, but the sound from the mono speakers is very good, and sound through active speakers or headphones is second to none. Its "Applesque" appearance is good and the operation is straight forward. My old Roberts came with a carry case and its a pity that one is not made for this one and a clock and alarm function would have been handy like what was on the ols radio. I am sure this little radio will give me many years of service
Usual Roberts excellent quality.....
Very simple to operate and small, thanks to AA batteries.
Sound from speaker is crisp and clear. Stereo over headphones ditto.
Batteries last me for a few days before recharging. A previous reviewer complains about poor battery life. This is probably due to them using Nickel-Cadmium batteries, rather than Nickel-Metal Hydride, which have much higher capacities. Highest capacity NICADS you can buy are 1100mA, versus 2900mA Nimhs. Is also possible batteries are not completely discharged when charged, so memory effect in evidence.
I would suggest NICADS are charged in an external charger, (not sure if radio is meant to recharge NICADS), ensuring it has some sort of 'refresh' or 'discharge' function to counter memory effect.
Shame this doesn't have twin speakers, but bought it as a rechargable model and saves swapping sets of batteries over.
excellent portable dab - charges aa batteries and holds charge well
I like the rechargeable battery feature. The sound quality is fine and with 2700mah AA batteries. It holds charge well enought to carry around the house. You do need to bring it back to its charger daily, but it has a handy little red light that goes out when the batteries are charged up. I use it as a spare battery charger too! It seems to be the only DAB that has this fantastic ability to charge standard rechargeable batteries.
I have since bought a pure evoke 3 that has better sound quaility but its bulky and you can't get chargepaks at all at the moment.
It would be nice if it had more preset buttons (only 5 on DAB and 5 on FM). It would be great if you could pause it too. But I need at least one DAB that has a normal radio footprint and the Gemini 49 is it.
Which said the sound quality is not that good. But it's good enough for speech and background music.
