Not what I was expecting, but still great5
When you look at the album cover, you think it's going to be a follow up for De-classified. All the indicators are there - a spaceman/robot with a strange tool in his hand and a crashed rocket. Turn the album over and next to all the song titles, instead of the length of each track, you have the BPM. This is your first indicator that things are different. There are a couple of fast ones with 135BPM and 125BPM, but most are under 100BPM.

It kind of has a feel a bit like Crash & Burn, but at the same time very different (and in my opinion much better - I was never that keen on Crash & Burn and In the Nude). The title Back to Earth is a very good one, after you have listened to it. You have just come back from a alien fueled mission (De-classified) and are now back on Earth. The songs still have lots of "out of this world" sound effects, but the feel is more grounded. Epoch Calypso has Spanish/Latino rhythm. Flippity Flippity is kind of Easy Listening style, but still has an Eat Static feel to it.

I think there is something for every Eat Static fan here. If you liked Crash and Burn and In the Nude, you will like this. If, like me, you weren't that keen on them, you will still like Back to Earth.

So, although it wasn't the Alien fueled follow-up I was expecting, it still has that unmistakable Eat Static quality to it. It is a much more mellow experience.

Well worth the money!

back to earth.....but still in outer space!! :D5
Back to earth is yet another fantastic album to emerge from the mind of the genius that is Merv Pepler. I first heard this being performed at the glade festival (2008) and was amazed at the strength of the sounds and basslines....after hearing it live, I rushed off to buy a copy and have been listening to it loads ever since.
The album is full of diverse sounds and a variety of styles that demonstrate how gifted Merv really is. Indeed, some favourites include "pharaoh" (crying out to be used for a film soundtrack!), "epoch calypso" (very latin-esque, complete with a heavy killer-but-also-subtle bassline!) and "valley of the moon" (pure floaty eat-static genius!). What strikes me about the whole album is the density of the sound - lush soundscapes, alien noises etc etc...there are no filler tracks here (not that I was expecting there to be any), just a fantastic colleciton of audio gems!
To finish, I;ve dealt with merv by email in the past and can honestly say that he is a decent chap! if you get the chance to see eat static live and you've never done before, check them out! :D

I am more into the chilled side ofpsychedelic music/ trance and this is an amazing album from this artist. I don't know much of their previous stuff, but as far as a 'chill' album goes, this is a definite addition in any psy chill/ dub collection. A quick description of tracks I like best:
1. Tuned Mass Damper - electro, 135bpm (but doesn't feel it), floaty background sounds, synth sounds - nice. (Reminds me a bit of Bluetech)
2. Pharoah - as the name suggests - been to Egypt? Belly dancers? That's it - great track - funky - addictive - makes you want to shake - aliens in the background.
3. Lo-ride Sloucher - glitchy sounds, aliens. Good track.
4. Flippity Flippity - Jazzy sound, double bass?, piano, sax/trumpet? Percussion. Typical jazz sound. Great loungey type track. Sunday lounging sound.
5. Epoch Calypso - as the name suggests......funky, jazzy, calypso sound, makes you want to dance!
9. Dune Rider - heavier bass, floaty background sounds, arabic flavours, nice beats.
10. Valley of the Moon - more chilled (90bpm), bassy, dubby, relaxing track. Good way to reach the end of the album.

Overall, a wonderful array of mucis styles, well thought and perfect for chilling, relaxing or after party but not sleeping as such! Enjoy for yourself.
