A book for every musician5
Ron Gorows book, Hearing and Writing Music, is a must for all who all who seek success in the music business. The book's intention is to guide musicians how to be able to hear and write music in the best way. Several exercises in all chapters make this book to an educational training program. The exercises guide us through several aspects in the hearing and writing process - all the way from the ability to hear a significant sound, to the ability to write music for a full orchestra. Gorow gives you guidelines for how to hear, compose and orchestrate your own music. He also reflects on how to succeed as a musician - and points out the traps one should avoid. The book is therefore suitable for young students as well as established and professional musicians. I have enjoyed reading Hearing and Writing Music for several years - for the purpose of my own composing, and I recommend it for my students!

Excellent Book5
Bit of an unusual book in that it addresses some topics that should have been dealt with years ago but are just brushed aside by most authors. It cleared up a number of points for me about problems I had with some fake book notation. As an amateur the scores in some books looked decidedly dodgy (incorrect chords, incorrect rhythm etc). One of the things that the author points out is that there is a chronic lack of music editing associated with many fake books but that's the way it is. His plan is to get the reader to learn to transcribe music by ear. I'm only just starting with this but there is plenty to go on with concerning how to present music in it's notational form depending on it's intended use. Despite all the excellent advice in the book, major effort is the key ingredient. The book is also intended as college/school teaching material so the first couple of chapters about the physics of sound etc might not be what you want. These chapters are not there in place of other stuff that mature readers may prefer. If you are interested in this sort of thing the book will certainly not disappoint.
