Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Cherish the Ladies are primarily known for their instrumental skills--nearly every member is a contest-winning musician--so it might come as a bit of a surprise that on The Girls Won't Leave the Boys Alone, 10 of the 13 tracks are songs. But the assured way in which the band delivers its sweet harmonies on the opening track ("The Broom of Cowdenknowes") proves the Ladies can sing as well as they can play their fiddles, flutes and accordions. They've invited a host of guest artists to perform with them, including singers Luka Bloom, Tom Chapin, Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger, fiddler Brendan Mulvihill, banjo picker Eric Weisberg, Chieftains flautist Matt Molloy and the legendary Irish balladeers the Clancy Brothers. In a particularly moving gesture, the six band members pay tribute to their families by playing a lovely version of "The Queen of Connemara" accompanied by their fathers and brothers. The Girls Won't Leave the Boys Alone is a departure from Cherish the Ladies' previous dance-tune-based recordings, but the quality of the singing is so good that you don't miss the jigs and reels. --Michael Simmons

Customer Reviews

This is a hauntingly beautiful recording played sensitively5
Having heard this group in concert in the Uk, I would recommend them highly. Their instrumentation & musically is second to none.
This is a hauntingly beautiful rendering of some well chosen tunes. The broom of the Cowdenowes is particularly well sung, As is the rammbling Irish man.
It's a must for all serious traditional Irish music listerners & a gem for all players, who can learn alot from this arrangements.

Exceptional example of contemporary/traditional folk.5
This album brings together some legendary names from the world of folk, both past and present. The songs are traditional but produced in a thoroughly modern way,to create an entrancing blend of the old and the new, remaining true to the roots from which it has arisen.

This recording brought tears to the eyes of this particular reviewer and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Very disappointing.1
Very disappointing. there is so much strong American, Celtic and British roots music that it seems a shame to waste time listening to this. Over produced, bland, no genuine feel, pretty but no soul or brain. Far better to spend your cash on Fairport Convention, Albion Band, Little Johnny England, Eliza Carthy, Kate Rusby, Mary Black, Cara Dillon, Bruce Cockburn, JJoni Mitchell... The list goes on, I played this CD once. I doubt I will play it again.
