Beautiful Tunes... Beautiful Tone
Simon Mayor has recorded a stunning collection of Celtic tunes.
I was so inspired by this collection that I took up the mandolin and tracked down the music book that goes with this cd (no I don't own shares in Simon Mayor!!).
Only after playing the mandolin for a year did I begin to appreciate the level of artistry that Simon Mayor brings to these traditional tunes and the beautiful tone he manages to get from his mandolin. None of the tracks are technical showpieces but all are quite simply elegant and exquisite pieces of music.
The standout track for me is The Dark and Slender Boy. The beauty of sound and the solo mandolin arrangement is so sublime it is almost too much of a good thing - but not quite.
