Second only to Alison Krauss and Union Station in the contemporary bluegrass revival, Nickel Creek have never been strict genre purists. Adding pop, rock, and more mainstream country aspects to their bluegrass-based sound only showcases the tradition at the heart of their music, and shows how intimately connected bluegrass is to other forms of pop. Focusingon the band's original material instead of their entertainingly eclectic covers, REASONS WHY (THE VERY BEST OF NICKEL CREEK) makes a strong case for the young group as some of thefinest songwriters in Nashville, featuring gems like "When In Rome" and "Somebody More Like You".
Note: Some versions of REASONS WHY (THE VERY BEST OF NICKEL CREEK) come with abonus DVD of music videos and live performances.

Good introduction, Videos for the completist
For the uninitiated, Nickel Creek are a 3-piece band (Chris Thile - mandolin, Sean Watkins - guitar and Sara Watkins - fiddle) who are usually augmented by a double bass player.
Originally arising from the bluegrass and folk music scene they have become much more as they have developed. All three players are of a virtuoso standard on their instruments, but they rarely ever seem to let this get in the way of playing songs. With three lead vocalists they produce a wide variety of material to suit each one and yet retain a certain core sound.
If you are tired of pulsating dance rhythms, over produced electronic pop or uninspired rock then Nickel Creek could well be the band for you...they were for me.
This collection is an excellent introduction to the band. Two live tracks are included on the CD, which to be frank have not been well recorded, but don't let this put you off the rest of the CD.
For those who already have the studio albums from which these tracks are taken then really this is only really worth viewing as a purchase in order to get the music videos. As a bonus you get a compilation mix CD with a couple of dodgy live tracks.
OUTSTANDING
THIS CD ALONG WITH THE BAND IS OUTSTANDING I GOT INTO THEM A BIT LATE I NEVER GOT TO SEE THEM LIVE NOW THAT THEY BROCKEN UP I MAY NEVER . EACH OF THE BAND MEMBERS CHRIS THILE AND SEAN WATKINS AND SARA WATKINS ARE OUTSTANDING MUSICIANS ON THE FIDDLE [SARA] GUITAR[SEAN] AND MANDOLIN [CHRIS] THE SONGS ALL ARE GREAT BULEGRASS SONGS [ALL WRITTEN BY THE BAND ] HARD TO SAY WHICH ONES THE BEST ALL HAVE BEEN RELEASED BEFORE EXCEPT THE TWO LIVE TRACKS BUT THE GEM TO THIS WOULD BEEN THE DVD MADE UP OF PROMOTIONAL VIDEOS BUT ITS NICE TO SEE THEM PLAY THOSE INSTRUMENTS WITH SUCH SPEED AND GREATNESS EACH OF THEM HAVE NOW GONE ON TO GREAT SOLO SUCCESS ALONG WITH ALISON KRAUSS NICKEL CREEK HAVE BROGHT BLUEGRASS TO A YOUNGER AUDIENCE AND ITS ABOUT TIME..
Very nice selection
This is a fine collection of songs from Nickel Creek's three albums, together with a couple of unreleased live tracks, plus a bonus DVD containing all (I think) of the promotional videos they've made. A lot has already been written about the history of the band (they began playing together when they were only children, and are still frighteningly young) and their skill (Chris Thile is possibly the best mandolin player in the world, but Sean and Sara Watkins are no slouches either). The music is derived from bluegrass, but with the addition of many modern influences, which come to the fore in the tracks off their most recent album. Great singing, playing and writing - in fact, the only bad thing about this band is that they're apparently on the verge of breaking up, which is a shame. In the mean time, this collection is a perfect introduction to their music.
