In one sense he was lucky, having left Old Trafford shortly before the Munich air disaster.

Out of the Mouth of a (Busby) Babe
I recommend this book to any United fan. John Doherty is chairman of the 'ex Man United players association', so he is a good choice to air his views on all of United's players since 1945. He tells some great stories about his colleagues and shows good a good analysis of players of more recent times.
You may not agree with all of John's views here (I didn't rate Jimmy Nicholl as much as he did), but it would be a dull world if we all agreed.
