This is the third edition of Cicerone's guide to the Coast to Coast trail popularised by Wainwright. The walk from St Bees Head in Cumbria to Robin Hood's Bay on Yorkshire's east coast is now one of the most popular long-distance walks in Britain. At 178 miles (300km) long, the trail can be easily walked within a two-week holiday period. The route is based on permitted rights of way and minimises the amount of road walking. The guide includes an accommodation listing. The guide is in three sections. The first gives the route description, from west to east, annotated as appropriate with notes of geological, historical, industrial, sociological and natural history interest. The second section gives the route description only in an east to west direction, cross-referenced to the points of interest. The final section comprises a description of variant routes and lists useful addresses.

The Photos are excellent, and the OS map inserts are highly practical. He (the author) includes a tremendous amount of interesting facts along the way. The walking directions are additionally given from east to west. The Aitchison-Jones Walker's handbook 2007

About the Author
A writer and photographer since 1978, Terry Marsh specialises in the outdoors, the countryside, walking and travel worldwide. He is the author of over 45 books, including the award-winning Cicerone guides to the Northern Coast to Coast Walk (1994) and the Shropshire Way (1999), as well as guidebooks to the Pennine Way, the Severn Way and the West Highland Way. Terry has a particular interest in Cumbria and the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, Lancashire, the Peak District, the Scottish Islands (especially the Isle of Skye) and the Isle of Man. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS) and of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (FSA Scot), and a Member of the Society of Authors, MENSA, the NUJ and the Outdoor Writers' Guild.

C-C review having completed the walk using the guide
Just completed this superb 190mile walk (end July 06). This lets you see the very best of England Coast, Lakes, Mountains, Pennines and Moors. Great sites on the way including the grave of Henry Jenkins 169 years (touching the grave adds years to your life, someone on the way told us!) We did it in just under 9 days camping and 1 night in Youth Hostel Keld (superb hostel) Most would do it in 12-18 and soak in the scenary. I would suggest taking a new guide like this book, good cear directions and buy a strip map (Harvey) and take a compass for those enevitable slips off the path.
The guide, bad first...does not include accomodation lists or camp sites or pubs(which the Amazon write up says it does) It refers constantly to interesting things to see but does not indicate where they are on the map. Why it does not include information on where to get water baffles me. We were despirate on one occasion. Do they drive the route by car or is Terry a camel?. Why not tell about the shower you can have for 50p next to the Tourist info centre in Richmond? or for that matter where toilets are on route?
The Good ... directions are very clear and accurate. The write up on things to see are well written and just the right length. The book is pocket sized and well bound.
