Respighi's Roman tone poems have been maligned as representing a kind of musical Ektachrome. In the case of the Pines and Fountains at least, this is most unfair: the scene painting is often deeply poetic and the orchestration marvellous. There is enchanting music in both scores - in particular, the ravishingly sensuous midnight Pines of the Janiculum and the magically still, tranquil and balmy Medici Fountain at twilight. Here the conductor realizes Respighi's vision as beautifully as Fruhbeck de Burgos without resorting to the Spaniard's slower-than-marked tempo.
In fact, Ozawa and the Boston orchestra characterize the Pines and the Fountains better than on any other disc I've tried (Dutoit, Muti, Kertesz, Maazel, Reiner, Karajan, Gatti). The playing and the internal balances are excellent. The 1970's recording, while not of the highest class, has no important shortcomings, and allows us to savour these wonderful readings to the full.
