Journalist's overview
This is a warning for any serious 'martial arts' students: this book is written by a journalist. It is not written by anybody who knows about self defence - unless you need to be told things like: footwork and good balance are essential; or you really believe that reverse punch (gyaku zuki) is the most powerful punch.
Some of the techniques are okay, but things you'll have seen before; some of them you will laugh at; a lot of them are suited to competition or something.
Lots of pictures of soldiers doing things to each other - probably very effectively - but not very helpful.
If you already train seriously and you have some idea about self defence techniques (maybe you've looked at 'Get Tough' by Capt. Fairbairn or 'Kill or Get Killed' or 'Dead or Alive') then this book is worthless to you.
Covers both sides of combat.
Before purchasing this book i was already practising in the many techniques of self defence. I was very impressed how the book dealt with psychological side of dealing with a potential threatening situation, and from experience this is paramount and the first thing which decides whether you are a survivor or loser. However i would not recommend this book to anyone who is only wishing to escape from an attacker or get an insight into basic defence moves, the moves which are contained in this book are used by special forces around the world and threfore are only to seriously injure or kill your opponent.
On this point when protecting yourself there are laws to abide(silly as it may seem) so this makes many of the moves impractical in civilian life, this book does provide you with the right mindset to deal foremost in a dangerous encounter.
NO NOSENSE SELF-DEFENCE
this book tells you how to defend yourself in loads of situations, it has some fantastic techniques and has some added detail about how soliders train in hand-to-hand comabat and related areas. detailed pictures that are understandable and break down the moves into an easy to understand form. However using these moves will get you sent to prison if you use them (and get caught)
