Very good piece of equipment for the money!
Hello,
Just purchased this product and have used it a few times. I must say it is a very good piece of kit for the money. The torque range is reasonable and the controls easy to operate.
Torque is selected by first unlocking the collar by twisting a nut on the bottom and then turning the collar to the desired torque, the lock is then reapplied by tightening the nut on the bottom.
When torque is reached, the feedback from the device is clear in the form of a clunk. The handle is not completely disengaged from the head so more torque could be applied but I suspect this would damage the spring and cause in-accuracies. I seem to remember reading that this device was with 3% tolerances but don't quote me to this, I found it on google, certainly not the best in this class (Halfords offering comes out top for this but costs about 20 quid more).
The instructions state that the device should be left de-torqued (lowest setting) when not in use as not to put pressure on the spring. Be careful with this and don't go bellow the minimum rating or the internals of the wrench are exposed.
Do not use this device as a tommy / breaker / cheater bar as it will break the springs potentially.
Pros
-Nice ratchet action.
-Clear feedback when torque is reached.
-Long enough handle to apply up to top torque.
-Feels very sturdy and heavy.
-Knurled grip makes for easy holding.
-Secure blow mounted case.
Cons
-Accuracy could be an issue depending on your use, but for this cost I would say it's brilliant.
-Perhaps a bit heavy and cumbersome for some jobs.
-If you unscrew the collar too much, it feels like you could break it, there is no end stop apparently.
-Getting higher torques requires quite a bit of turning/strength.
-Some accessories may have been nice, perhaps a 1/2 - 3/4 adapter for example.
Good quality and an excellent bargain
Just received my second torque wrench from Draper and this one has a much more accurate scale for selecting your torque setting than the 3/8 drive version. Feels heavy and robust and the clicking mechanism disengages the head successfully to let you know when your at the specific torque rating. It does however, as I think was noted by someone else reviewing one of the 2 wrenches - not disengage fully so you can in fact over tighten the bolt your dealing with. In DIY mechanics whereby I am fitting a new engine in my Skyline and the torque rating for bolts is in a range of usually 5-10 Nm anyway, that isn't a problem. However for more accurate torquing you will definitely need a more accurate wrench.
Overall very pleased and I would recommend highly. Do note this bar is nearly 50cm long . . .
torque wrench
ive got a torque wrench i use for work which has to be calibrated once a year
i tested this one on a nut at 50nm with my calibrated one and it was within about 1 or 2nm over SO IM HAPPY with it
