Fantastic concise and blooming useful!
This book is absolutly fantastic. It covers everything, and combined with the CD makes a very very good revision tool. I really wish I had discovered it weeks before my exam! With it, you will never really run out of practice questions, as there are thousands, and they are exactly what the board wants. There are extension questions too, which help make the actual exam questions much easier!!
Very helpful indeed, and useful for other boards too, as principles are the same.
Excellent
I am currently studying an OU primer course in Maths and this book along with its AQA A-level partner were recommended by my Tutor. The AQA syllabus closely mirrors the OU primer. This review applies to both the AS and A2 books.
As the books are not cheap and Amazon does not offer massive discounts on A-level texts I made a visit to Waterstones where I was able to check their suitability and compare them with their main rivals. I must have been impressed because I walked out of Waterstones with copies of both!
All I can say is that I am amazed how good the books are. The sections are clear and well presented. The authors and publishers have spent a lot of time working on the textual explanations so you are eased through each step in the mathematical process. The CDs are useful, using PDF files which integrate well with the textbooks. At the end of each section there's lots of relevant practice questions to try.
The Maths textbooks I used in the 1970's were dull and opaque compared to these - no wonder exam results are improving!
Good but not fantastic!
Overall this textbook is good but not fantastic!
If you are an average candidate, ie need the attention of a tutor in order to encourage understanding of certain materials in regards to this subject then my advice is use this book as an additional source but not as a main source of study. There are a rich variety of worked examples, annotations and a clear step by step guide on how to tackle each maths question; However it is in the context of an paintbrush overview; ie, the author assumes that you have studied maths previously and gained a B or higher. So, you must be good at manipulation and have a reasonable sound knowledge on the concept of maths otherwise you will not approve of this textbook.
But if you meet the criteria above and are studying independently you will not need the attention of a tutor and will be guaranteed to do well in the exams.
