Excellent exam-orientated revision guide5
This workbook goes with the KS 3 SATS revision guide. It has three sets of practice tests, each focused on a part of the exam for which it is designed to prepare: "The Reading Test"; "The Writing Test"; and "The Shakespeare Test". The introduction says "This book is for anyone getting ready for the KS3 English SATs. It contains lots of tricky questions... because that's the only way you'll get better. It's also got some daft bits in to try and make the experience at least vaguely entertaining for you." This sums up the ethos of the workbook: targeted, effective and surprisingly entertaining.

Summary: useful practice if you're preparing for the SATs exam.

KS3 English - The scary bits2
Not for us. The style is a bit gimmicky. The cartoons may appeal to a younger child. My children (one 14 and one 12) both got fed up very quickly. I flicked through and whilst I thought the idea was good with good information (very colourful and presented in a bit of a comic strip way) the proof of the pudding was that the book was not looked at very much - they both got fed up with it very quickly. The book demands a lot of reading despite the way it is set out - which is not a bad thing but the jokey style did not appeal to my kids. Other books from the same publisher on other KS3 subjects got a better response from my children.

great overview5
My son found this easy to read and understand. This is a good overveiw of KS3, it does seem to cover everything a child will need to revise in KS3.
My child is educated at home and he uses this book as a guide to what children cover in KS3 at school.
He supplements this book with Collins books, lots of reading and online websites.
