Customer Reviews
Matt's rare original Decca recordings re-issued - superb
This CD double set is a must for Matt Monro fans - it contains a number of his original Decca recordings which have been re-mastered with superb sound quality including The Bean Song (aka Which Way to Boston). The insert also contains a photo taken at Matt's first Decca recording session. Recommended for the Decca re-issues and excellent value.
Early Matt magic plus live in Australia
CD1: The bonus singles tracks that are presented here on CD1 were recorded between November 1956 and March 1957 and represent middle of the road pop vocals of the period. In fact, Matt recorded a total of 20 songs for Decca but only these 18 exist. It is fascinating to hear the mix of traditional big band vocals and hit parade aimed material all of which are given an energetic performance by Matt.
CD2: The cabaret is a wonderful reminder of the voice that was Matt Monro at the peak of his career and the atmosphere is warm and receptive. The show recorded at The New Twenties Club in Melbourne includes so many of Matt's hits that it must be considered a definitive live performance. The musical director is Kenny Clayton. Included is a rare performance of "What to do" a charming ballad as well as the Mancini composition "In the arms of love" which requires female audience participation! "Born Free" is given a super treatment by Matt and the orchestra. He closes with the powerful and romantic "Softly as I leave you". A magical performance capturing all the warmth of a true performer. The sound quality is excellent throughout and the live show is clear capturing both orchestra and vocalist well.
