One for the collectors!
A long awaited DVD of the exuberant, swinging and wonderful Jamaican jazz pianist (whose music I have 'lived off' for 2+ decades). Video (region code free) and sound quality (Dolby 5.1 they say) are excellent; with 17 tracks (135 minutes of footage) and an interview of the pianist, it is also value for money. (My thanks to both New Morning/Inakustik and Amazon for getting this out as DVDs of Monty Alexander are rare! (I am unconnected with all)).
Recorded live at the New Morning jazz club in Paris (2001), the selection covers a variety of Monty's music: less of the earlier striding hits (as in the superb "Monty Alexander in Tokyo" CD) and more of the more Caribbean styled and reflective offerings. That said there is plenty of swing.
What I missed, however, were the tracks and video clips as featured currently on YouTube. The YouTube trio rendition of "Too Marvellous For Words" (in which Monty sings) currently is far superior to the version performed here (solo), and several other tracks recorded I think in the same club (perhaps different nights?) are alas missing (Berne Coconuts, Broadway, Calypso Tune, Got To Go etc.) That is a real shame! - for whatever technical reason. However, perhaps Alexander fans will have the best of both recordings between this enjoyable DVD and the efforts of jazz fans on YouTube.
