Sonny Rollins live in Vienne - A living Legend
Pretty much the perfect companion piece to Sonny's recently released "Roadshows vol 1" CD. This is another quality release from his own Oleo/doxy label and this DVD catches the great man in joyous form. The picture quality is superb with plenty of closeup footage,the master shots are nicely framed and have great clarity too but most importantly the band are enjoying themselves ! Shot in 2006 in front of a 7000 capacity audience at an old Roman Amphitheatre this is pretty much the ideal setting for an enthusiastic crowd to view open air jazz.The half dozen tunes selected here generally run in excess of 10 minutes each with Sonny taking the bulk of the soloing.The sound quality too is superb with no dropouts or other technical hitches.The tunes are great ones also and even Sonny gets to shake his rather creaky hips to those lovely calypsos "Don't stop the Carnival" and "Global Warming" as he repeats chorus after joyous chorus of improvised magic."Sonny Please" also makes an appearance here and sounds better than the recent CD version."They say its wonderful" is another gentle but enjoyable romp and the set is rounded out with the ballad "I see your face before me".
All in all a great DVD package from one of the greats of jazz with superb picture and sound quality.Wish all jazz DVD's were this good !
