    Good Drive4
Maxtor and Seagate have been making hard disks for more than 20 years, and are adamant about putting it on their box. So you think this is a quality item, which is is in many ways.

The drive is sleek, 20cm long, 6cm high and around 10cm wide, and has a green light on the right front side of the unit. The connectors go on the back. This drive is purely USB, it doesn't support firewire. One thing I didn't like about this unit is the closeness the USB and power sockets, they're literally millimetres away from each other, and in a sort of enclosed area, so it's not easy getting in there if you have big fingers. Another thing is this doesn't have rubber feet, so heaven forbid you knock it, it will slide.

It's easy for Windows users to install, just plug in the power, then the USB and you're off, NFTS formatted, and ready to go, no need to do anything else. This is great for someone who's not tech savy or is very new to PCs, they can buy this, learn to copy their stuff on this and be happy that their stuff is safe. If you're a Mac user, it's quite easy to format to HFS+ but I suggest doing quick format, unless you like waiting 5+hrs.

The drive is relatively quiet - I compared it with Western Digital's MyBook, and it's about the same level, which isn't too bad. The sound is actually soothing, not like old PCs from 2000, with the big fans that woke the neighbours!

The storage space is 1.5TB, that's one point five terabytes, or 1500 gigabytes. That's a lot of stuff really, 319 DVDRs full in fact, and takes less space than 319 DVD re-writeables. That's nearly a few million pictures, tens of thousands of music files, and a lot of video. This is superb for backing up data from your hard drives, or just putting a few pics from your camera somewhere safe. Windows shows it as 1.38TB, but if you look carefully it's actually 1.5TB.

Things I like about the drive: it's portable, light and easy to setup, I can just put it on when I want and it's easy to copy over. It's quite speedy too, took around an hour to move 100GB of data.

Things I don't like about this drive include the fact it has no rubber feet, it takes a lot of desk space when you compare it to your MyBook and it's got no power button.

Altogether this is a good purchase, and worth getting now - making this about £1.35 a gigabyte, it's worth a go, and it's got Maxtor's 3 year warranty too.

    Be very careful of knocks3
I bought one of these, happily loaded it with ripped DVDs (from my own collection) to use as a media drive for my HDTV connected Mac Mini where it performed very well for three weeks.

It has a smooth, curved edged design, has no rubber feet and is very 'slippy'. One afternoon I knocked it and it fell off the TV unit it was sitting on, to a carpeted floor. It fell about 2 feet.

    It never worked again.

I accept the accident was my fault - but beware, the case doesn't have rubber feet, doesn't stack well because of it's design and one knock killed it dead.

    Stay Away1
This product is a total waste of money. I do not recommend anyone buying it. On the surface the product is good and the price is right but this thing lasted a week before it broke, taking all my data with it.

The technical support from Maxtor / Seagate is complicated and almost impossible to use. It took me hours to figure out what they wanted me to do and once I got through it still didn't work. The debugging software doesn't work at all on Mac and it loads on PC but doesn't do anything.

Customer support from amazon and their distributor is lousy. Waste of time and money. Learn from my mistake, don't buy this.
