Customer Reviews
Saviour of my system ...
If, like me, you're still running an AGP based PC then you quite possibly installed an X1950 GPU some time ago. If you did then you're probably plagued by lockups, exceptions and bitmap noise that make UT-3 in particular unplayable. I paid £200 for my X1950 a year ago and today I installed this 3850 GPU for less than half that. Once I'd got the drivers right it runs like a charm and I've got system stability again. UT-3 is totally playable even at 1600 x 1200 and feels solid. My 3DMark06 score has gone up by a quarter too.
Drivers: don't be tempted to use the supplied drivers on the CD or worse still the latest Catalyst drivers for the 3850. The former are massively out of date and the latter don't support the AGP version. Instead locate the Hotfix drivers for the 3850 on the ATI Radeon site (customer support area) and use those. They work flawlessly with this GPU (so far).
This is the last great AGP GPU I'd imagine so the end of an era. A great end though!
A must for AGP systems
If, like me,you still have an AGP graphics port this is as good as it is going to get. I run A P4 3.2ghz processor and 1.5 gig of RAM and this card meant that for the first time I could see games like Bioshock,Left 4 Dead & STALKER the way they were meant to be seen. I upgraded from the Nvidia 7300GT, which is a similar price, but the 3850 absolutely leaves it for dead. Remember you may need to upgrade your power supply as well (if you still have an AGP socket your PC may currently be underpowered) and you will need at least 450watts. The hotfix driver for AGP cards on the Radeon site is also a must.
Driver shipped with product needs immediate update to use
Just a note if you buy this product. Go straight to the Saphire website and download the Hotfix ATI catalyst driver. The Catalyst included on the disk in this pack has issues due to this card being AGP.
Also - this product come complete with a DVI to VGA converter so you can use it with older monitors. You wont need to buy a third party converter to go with this.
