Excellent media drive
My Buffalo was ordered last Friday and delivered on Tuesday (free delivery). Having had a buffalo drive before I expected it to be quiet and reliable. So far I have not been disappointed. It is completely silent, runs very cool and is completely invisible behind my Sony media centre PC.
Formatted capacity is 931GB - normal for a nominal 1TB drive. The drive comes formatted with FAT32 and I used Vista to convert it to NTFS, then discovered that this is the first thing the included software offers to do for you. I installed the turbo mode software, but cannot comment on whether it really speeds things up - subjectively I see little difference in speed between this drive and the WD Passport I had attached previously. However, the power management utility is really useful if, like me, you are using the drive to serve large media files to a home media centre. I have set it up to power down the drive after 15 minutes of inactivity (it powers up again as soon as it is accessed).
One point to bear in mind if you are moving large amounts of data from a previous drive - copying between 2 USB drives on the same system is really slow. It took three and a half hours to move 130GB of data from my old system in this way. I'm sure this is due to the limitations of USB 2.0 and nothing to do with this drive specifically.
500GB Drivestation
I owned the old version of this in a 250GB but had filled it up so was pleasantly suprised to see that they had updated the look of the product, looks like my PS3 however that really wasn't that important, the thing which grabbed me was the power usage, 75% less than a standard drive they use some new fangled technology which allows the drive to go into a park mode when not searching for information which means it is not running burning my cash. Also pleased to see that they included free back up software and encryption to give an element off added value. From a technical point of view the transfer rates are excellent, I transfered the contents of my Laptops hardrive 80GB in under an hour using a standard USB cable from the box. Really please I stuck with Buffalo.
NikP - iMac User
Good product and did what it says on the box. I was pleasantly surprised when I took it out of the box to see how small the unit is, small that the 250 Gb WD HD I purchased about three years ago. Plugged it into the mac and it automatically assigned for the Time Module and did whatever formatting required.
