Review
‘This is a delightful book providing exactly what the title says it does…The careful thought that has gone into the preparation of these diagrams…will be greatly appreciated by undergraduates and postgraduates alike.’
Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy

‘…the concise style makes it easy to follow, very readable’
Final Year medical student, University of Glasgow

"For the depth of information – certainly as a third year – required, this book will more than suffice, and is a welcome addition to my bookshelf" Sphincter – Liverpool Medical Students Society Journal

"I for one will use the excellent diagrams as the basis for some of my student tutorials. This is a useful textbook that neatly places medical microbiology in its clinical context." The Royal College of Pathologists Bulletin

"Whilst this publication is slim and inexpensive, its merit is great. The text is easily read, very accessible and will be a valuable addition to all medical students′ personal collection. The book should be strongly recommended to students as a supplement to a core text."
Dr Emma Honey, Specialist Registrar, Aberdeen Royal Infirmary

Published Reviews of the Second Edition

"This is a useful book if you want a general summary of what microbiology involves."

5th Year Medical Student, University of Liverpool

From the Back Cover
Medical Microbiology and Infection at a Glance is a concise and accessible guide to the field of microbiology and infection. Updated throughout, the second edition takes the reader through the underlying concepts of microbiology to the pathogenesis, transmission and clinical management of infection and disease. Following the now classic ‘At a Glance’ format, topics are discussed on double page spreads. On one page, helpful memorable diagrams illustrate vital points and on the accompanying page, the text presents key facts and fundamental information.

Starting with structure and classification, section one covers the transmission, investigations, therapy and control of infections. Section two and three cover the vital details of bacteriology and virology respectively. The final three sections include essential coverage of mycology, parasitology and systemic infection. The second edition includes three new chapters, which cover the use of antibiotics and treatment guidelines; vaccination and emerging infections as well as a new chapter increasing the coverage of Enteric Gram–negative bacteria.

The second edition of Medical Microbiology and Infection at a Glance is an ideal resource for medical and biomedical science students, whilst students of other health professions and those in areas such as infection control will also find it invaluable. This book fits into the budget and reading time of busy students, and is recommended as primary or supplementary reading for a lecture–based course, and/or as a book for revision prior to examinations.

"Modern medicine cannot be formulated in quiz-compends"1
course A: preclinical pathology and microbiology (150 students, 2nd yr)
This book will appeal to those students who like the "facts" pre-digested for rapid cramming before exams. As a teacher, like Flexner a century ago, I am averse to these "quiz compends" and feel they leave students with a transient and superficial exposure to the subject. I suspect that this review will encourage enormous numbers to purchase the book!

course B: honours school Infection & Immunity (50 students 3rd yr)
No use at this level.

course C: clinical microbiology & infectious disease (150 students 4th yr)
Essentially no value clinically.

great...and simple4
this is a great wee book to have by your bed to read little bits at a time. the layout and diagrams makes it very easy to navigate. I luv it.

A good basic text4
There are a lot of microbiology textbooks out there and I feel that they all assume you know things that you don't! This book takes it right from the start, and covers the basics of microbiology first, and goes on to deal with infection and infection control, immunization etc. It's very easy to read, and would be good for anyone who is new to the topic, but I would suspect you would need something a bit more substantial if you were a microbiologist. It's good for medics and healthcare workers though and makes the topic much easier to get to grips with.
