Product Description

Clinical Skills: Oxford Core Text is a comprehensive, practical guide for medical students covering all aspects of history-taking, physical examination, and simple practical procedures - how to take a history, elicit and evaluate problems, the method of examining a patient, and how to interpret the significance of findings. The book also includes guidance on basic data interpretation - how to carry out and interpret test results. Common difficulties are highlighted and solutions given with the aid of case histories and practical tips. Specially drawn colour illustrations and photographs demonstrate examination techniques and clinical diseases. The writing style is accessible and easy to follow - almost like a tutorial from an experienced doctor at the bedside. For advanced students there are summaries, useful lists and hints for finals, including a chapter covering the different formats they may encounter. As the foundations of clinical skills remain constant this book will remain an invaluable reference throughout the working life of a doctor.

"The book feels as though you are at the bedside being taught by a doctor."

Review
The book explains everything with simplicity and even the Jugular Venous Pressure appears doable after a read of the chapter on the cardiovascular system. I especially liked the explanation of all the abbreviations used in medical notes. Practical information like this separates the book from others and after having read numerous clinical skills books during Phase 1, this is by far my favourite. ... this book is the best of its kind available. Excellent book5
The best part of this book is that it gives very good examination routines for the cardiovascular, respiratory, abdominal and other major systems. Students can easily memorise the routine and get ready for OSCES. This book in my opinion is much better than Macloed's and Hutchinson's as these do not give routines.

Although it is not in the reading list at Cardiff Medical School, it should prove very useful for exam preparation.

Excellent as both an examination guide and a source of clinical information5
This is a very good book. It contains in depth information on all the basic clinical examinations (history taking, respiratory, cardio, neuro etc.) as well as miscellaneous chapters such as "On the Spot Diagnoses", "Chest X-ray", "Finals" and the superb section on the ECG.

The layout is very well thought out. Each chapter begins with detailed reviews of all the relevant symptoms and their causes. It then outlines the examination process as a list (invaluable for revising the day before!) before going through each point in considerable detail.

The colour photographs are brilliant, and really aid the student in understanding and memorising the examination process, and the appearance of common signs.

All in all an excellent book for medical students in their first and second years. Much better than any other clinical skills book I've used. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

Fantastic book!5
This is an excellent all-round book for learning clinical skills. It's written extremely well - it keeps your attention even when reading the minutiae of various examinations. It's also very useful for OSCE preparation. It's user-friendly, relevant and up-to-date, unlike most of the other clinical examinations books around. I've used McLeod in the past, but find this much better.
