Synopsis
In this wacky family comedy, the Collins patriarch has died, leaving behind a video will and an assorted bunch of nutcases, which makes strait-laced college student Kate Collins think she was born into the wrong family. Her father is a former child actor now making pornos. Her aunt Lucy is finally going to marry her long-time companion, Judy, which titillates brother Skip, the father of annoying twins who like the way their aunt Kate is developing. The obnoxious Alice Collins annoys everyone with her insistence on pushing everyone's button, resulting in a hysterical fight at the dinner table with Lucy. And Grandma Collins hangs out in the background, hiding her own secrets and doing a bit of master manipulation herself. Meanwhile, Kate has been given the awesome task of delivering her grandfather's eulogy; as she talks to her family to find out more about him, she learns more than she ever wanted to know, digging up secrets and coming to understand her relatives in ways she never thought possible.

Puts the Fun in Funeral
This film is jam packed with acting talent, Hank Azaria is quite poignant as the former child star who wonders what happened to his promising career and Debra Winger is hilarious as the loquacious head of a silent family. To be honest I can't remember the last time I saw a film in which all the actors pulled their own weight as they do here.
I did see the twist coming very early on, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment of watching the interplay between the family members. I don't want to say too much about the funny bits as they're funny because they're unexpected, but when the brother (Ray Romano) questions his sister's girlfriend about their sex life I laughed so hard my stomach hurt.
The DVD doesn't have much in the way of special features, the obligatory cinema trailer is there and some deleted scenes, which are really extensions of scenes already in the film.
If you like 'quirky' (I like to think realistic, as every family has its quirks) comedy dramas then you may love this as I do.
