Synopsis
This is an examination of the fake psychology of one of the most influential thinkers of the 20th century, Carl Gustav Jung. The book unravels many of the key theories on which Jungian analysis is based in an attempt to show how threadbare the evidence is.
Customer Reviews
A very well documented book
Reading Jung seven years ago introduced me to psychoanalytical theories for my PhD, as well as to a psychoanalyst. I read many books from Jung that are easily avalable in bookshops or through ordering (in opposite to what the formal critics of Noll's book pretends, at least in France). Even if I, and many friends, were fascinated by Jung, the strength of his experiences, what seemed to be their authenticity, it seemed strange that this person was so wise, defaultless. Reading about his relationship with Spielrein gave me some hint that Jung was far less honest than he pretended as nothing was mentioned in his autobiography about it. This lead me to read this book and I found it very well documented, consistent with the autobiography and Jung thoughts presentation. It makes the historical background of these thoughts understandable and highlights their limits (eg, anthropological points of views that have been largely contested by the ehtnologic researcb). Noll is very honest in the sense he does not negate what scientific material Jung brought to psychiatric and psychoanalytic research before he built the project to turn psychoanalysis into a religious movement.
one of the worst books of the decade
One of the worst books of the decade!Misunderstanding of everything on a Grand Scale. The worst ever argumentation i saw, stretching arguments to the point of pure lies to prove a ficticious personal point of view. But thank God,from just two "small details" one can debunk the whole book. The first happens to appear at the first page of the Preface! At the third paragraph one can read the reader,an inside look into the historical reality of Jung's world during the most creative years of his life(1913-25)." One glance at the Collected Works of Jung is enough for ANYBODY to see that from the 18 volumes of the Collected Works only 1-7 are written in the period prior to 1925-all the rest 11 volumes, that in actual pages surmount to more than 75% of Jung's Work were written after 1925!By far the most CREATIVE years of Jung were his last 20,during which he wrote his Job(1952)Mysterium Coniunctionis(1955-56)etc,not to mention his most important essays(eg like the ones included in " Civilization in transition")that were published mainly after 1930! From only this sentence one-who has READ Jung and spent time STUDYING DEEPLY his thought-can judge that Noll is in complrete ignorance of what Jung REALLY wrote and what from what he did write is actually IMPORTANT! bottom he says that Jung's works are more widely read than Freud's.If Noll can point to anybody ONE book of Jung that today sells more than the 5 best selling books of Freud, then i withdraw all my accusations! He simply cannot!Jung's writtings were NEVER popular simply because Jung is a difficult writter, never reaching the eloquence of Freud.Actually Jung's original writtings are so little read today, that if you now try to order from Amazon.Uk many of the volumes of his C.W's you will not be able to do it!If you are a mazochist try finding some of Jung's books at your local bookstore! From just these two statements that are presented as FACTS(and anybody writting about Jung should know better!)ANYONE of you can now see that Noll's only achievement amounts to have found an attractive tittle to sell an EMPTY case.Don't fall in the trap i have fallen into! It's not worth a penny, although an attractive tittle it really is!
