brilliant
If you haven't read this yet - DO! I is a pure work of art.

Brilliant, drags on a bit but overall excellent!
This really is a brilliant book. It took me a while to get into it, but when you do, it is hard to put the book down.
I would recommend reading all of it, even if you feel like putting it down, because it didn't let me down!
I would recommend from 12+, (I was 13 when I read it)!

Valley of unrealised potential
This book is not bad, as one reviewer says, but it is certainly not worthy of the terms "masterpiece" or "children's classic." The prose is generally good and there are some very nice passages, but any real potential for excellence remains unrealised. The story fails to take advantage of either the cornish countryside and village, the amazon trip, the 'adopted' amazon boy's story, or the main character's family background. All of which could have made for excellent stories. The fantasy animals, mugwoops, seemed rather pointless and 'cute-tsy.' Perhaps better suited to a different story.

The pace is slow and generally superficial of all its themes. I had to push myself to bother finishing the last 60-70 pages and I can't say I will be recommending it. If you want a much better story about the Amazon, read: Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson. There are many, much better stories out there than this one.
