Review
From The Good Book Guide This book is a hugely evocative yet entirely accessible portrait of the city as it was going through one of its most tumultuous periods of social change. With lavish illustrations and a fabulous introduction from Peter Ackroyd, this will prove irresistible to both historians and bookworms alike. --From The Good Book Guide
From Your Family Tree This book is the best kind of social history: real life described by real people, both rich and poor themselves, who were really there. --Your Family Tree
From The Western Daily Press You don't read this book, but rather immerse yourself in early Victorian London. so vividly do the voices of this lost world resonate that you feel you are there. Paterson has taken a range of voices from every level of 19th-century London and has woven a narrative that makes sense of their lives. --Western Daily Press
Synopsis
This book offers a fascinating, evocative account of 19th-century London, so well known from Charles Dickens' much-loved novels. This book draws on descriptions of life in the capital from original letters, diaries and newspapers, as well as Dickens' own social commentary, to paint a vivid portrait of a city undergoing massive social changes. A unique gazetteer section with a modern-day map allows the reader to discover where places and attractions mentioned in the text can be seen in today's London.

Absolutely gripping if you love life-like history
Surprised by the lack of reviews.
I just happened to start reading this book while at a friends house.
Too intricate and interesting to describe, i was overwhelmed. Please read this book, even if it is the only one you will buy about London (in the 19th century!)
