Il était une fois/Once upon a time
"Cinderella", "Sleeping Beauty" and "Puss in Boots" are just some of the magical stories in this edition of Charles Perrault's mystical writings. This edition is quite exhaustive, and has the advantage for learners of French in that the original French and and an English translation are printed side by side. Admittedly, the English translation is a bit dry in places, as it seeks for exact closeness to the original text and wording, sometimes ignoring English nuances and idioms (for example, calling "Little Red Riding Hood" - an almost mythical name - "Little Red Hood", simply because it's perhaps a more linguistically accurate translation of "Le Petit chaperon rouge"). Yet even still, it's a good effort, and the fact that it contains lesser-known works left out of even the average French edition (most notably the "Griselda" story), earns it gold stars alone on the grounds of intellectual curiosity.
