Customer Reviews

Aspirational5
For anyone at Swavesey Camera Club on 22nd January this year, I abjectly apologise for so unforgivably monopolizing Tom Mackie, who was there to give a talk to the club, at every opportunity. I was so delighted to meet him after reviewing Tom Mackie's Landscape Photography Secrets and using it as inspiration for locations around Norfolk. Actually Tom sounded a little understandably miffed about people using his books for this purpose, rather than carefully reading them to learn how to take their own original and memorable photographs.

Which leads me on to Photos with Impact. At the beginning of his talk at Swavesey, Tom Mackie commented how difficult it must be for anyone starting out new right now as a photographer - and he doesn't envy them. But this book gives masses of generous advice on how to get ahead in the success stakes, and Tom is certainly right up there with the world's most successful landscape photographers, not just with photo libraries but cornering lucrative markets such as a range of Ikea prints.

The author explains what makes a photograph striking, the effective use of colour and what may be hidden in details, and the search for strong graphic elements in a shot. He advises never to be satisfied with the first attempt but to try different times of day, weather conditions, viewpoints and ranges. He covers the importance of the sky, human figures, lighting, forward planning, framing and composition. There are many useful suggestions such as the use of reflections, how to use lead-in lines, create mood, use filters - and even digitally manipulate (although at the time of writing, the author was still using film cameras) - for example to strengthen composition.

The entire book is packed with stunning example shots, all aspirational, though I would not have chosen the particular cover shot. My favourite is a church and the Dolomites, St Johann Italy, but I'm sure everyone will have their own.

It doesn't get better than this...5
Excellent, one of the best photography books I've ever encountered. I don't think he even mentions digital photography in this book because it's not relevant. It is about taking photos not about what equipment you use. Strongly recommended.

excellent photography advice4
Tom Mackie is one of my favourite photographers . This book is well up to his usual standard . It is packed with useful information about taking pictures . The book is worth the price for the pictures by themselves
