could be a bit cheaper but essential
Absolutely essential if you use the Nikon D80 or the new D90. Not only for portrait shooting but also out in the field where battery life is important.

The grip also adds some balance to the DSLR body's feel in your hands. It could be a bit cheaper, and do not be tempted by generics or equivalents. Nikon build their stuff properly and that counts.
