Easy to install - works great
Just bought this product from Amazon a few days ago and it works well although I haven't tried out all its functionality. I purchased a seperate 500GB hard drive and found it easy to set up. I transfered all my movies from my PC using the USB connection in one quick step and the device was able to read all the files.
It's HD compatible unlike some of the other media players I checked out. The construction is a bit flimsy which was a bit of a disappointment compared to the DViCO Tvix models. Good value for money.
Cheap plastic unreliable faulty
Had this for 4 months now, finally returning it for a replacment.
The HDD keeps freezing. After weeks of trial and error found out the internal power supply/cable to the HDD is faulty and cuts the power to the HDD. The mains power cable into the back of the box is also a bit unreliable.
The manual was translated from German into English and is very poor and doesn't cover everything.
There is no FTP software and had major trouble getting this set up so gave in in the end. A big waste of time because it's supposed to be wireless! So i always have to hardwire the media player to upload movies to the hard drive. The GUI interface comes from the 1970's! It's a total joke. It's not even a GUI - it predates the concept of a GUI!!
I eventually managed to access a few directories on my PC from the Media Player but this was very slow and unintuitive. You intend going up one level and you end up in a totally different directory.
If you're a total computer whizz kid you may be ok with the Freecom otherwise don't waste your time on this!
The buttons on the remote control are tiny and you can't read the print above the buttons.
JPEG images are ALWAYS on slideshow mode - there is no option to manually move onto the next image. The prehistoric GUI doesn't allow for thumbnalls.
The only thing i like is the HDMI movie playback which is ironic because the HDD keeps crashing during movie playback due to the faulty powers supply issues.... haha what a joke!
Do yourself a favour and seriously consider the Popcorn Hour box instead. It has its own FTP software, supports more media formats etc...
Good value and easy to use!
Found the Freecom MediaPlayer good value for money. Got MP3 and videos streaming to my LCD pretty quickly. Has loads of file support with all the MPEG, Divx and Jpeg for pictures. The streaming is very good, the buffer was quick and images arrived on my TV pretty rapidly after connection. No fan inside so it has no noise which is good for product in the living room. Using S-Video, but the HDMI will be handy for when I upgrade my LCD. Will put my own hard drive in soon and begin storing music and video directly onto the MediaPlayer (has a USB port to connect to a PC or Laptop), but so far working very well as a media steamer. 10/10
