Product Description

"Mastering Anxiety" is a major step forward in the way we understand and deal with a wide range of anxiety disorders - from phobias to post traumatic stress. Based on the human givens approach to psychotherapy, it contains science-based insights into human behaviour, our needs and the ways in which we get those needs met that will help you overcome a wide range of anxiety-led behaviours and take back control of your life. Down-to-earth and easy-to-read, this book gives clear advice and practical steps for anyone wanting to conquer their own over-anxious behaviour - whatever it is - or help others overcome theirs. Full of practical techniques for learning how to relax, it also teaches you how to avoid "black and white thinking" and gives examples of how to change your perspective on something you fear, to reframe your thinking and trick your brain into not making the inevitable catastrophic 'pattern match' which causes your anxiety. And encouraging case studies, covering all kinds of anxious or phobic behaviour show you how others have successfully mastered their anxiety. "The Human Givens Approach" series was launched in October 2004 with How to lift depression...fast. This immediately became a bestseller and has consistently ranked as the topselling book on depression on Amazon since its launch. In May 2005, "Freedom from Addiction" was published to critical acclaim. Each book in the series explores a recognised psychological or behavioural problem and shows in clear, non-jargonistic language how to treat it effectively with psychological interventions. Future titles will cover: anger, psychosis, disturbed children, self-harming, obesity, workplace stress, antisocial behaviour, ageing, disability and saving families.

Customer Reviews

Not what I expected2
As an anxiety sufferer I hoped this book would bring me some much needed help, I'm afraid it didn't help in the slightest, it made me much worse than I already was and I felt I needed to stop reading it 3/4 of the way through. I'm not giving it 1 star as I will try to read it again in a few months, maybe I will write another review on it in the future. I think it would be valuable for someone with a family member or friend who suffers from anxiety/panic attacks/PTSD to see things from their point of view. It just wasn't for me (at least not at the moment)

I have gone back to another anxiety book I have previously wrote a review on.

Better than any medicine!5
This book on mastering anxiety is as easy to follow and as helpful as the ones on depression and addiction by the same authors, both of which I read as part of my counselling course. It's packed full of useful explanations and practical help and I think anyone suffering from any form of anxiety or fear problem would find it invaluable. GPs should give it away to patients; it would save the NHS a fortune. As well as helping anxious people overcome their phobias, panic attacks and PTSD just as surely as their wonderful book on depression lifts people out of black moods and hopelessness, it shows you how to find out if a GP, counsellor or psychotherapist is competent to help you or not. For anyone whose life is made miserable by excess anxiety, this book is worth its weight in gold.

Invaluable5
This book is so helpful. I really think that its clear explanation of what is going on in the brain is incredibly valuable. The human givens approach is the way to go if you are having problems thinking straight.
