Shortlisted for the Mind 2008 Book of the Year prize, 'An Idea in Practice' is a celebration of the astonishing inroads human givens psychology has made since its inception ten years ago. Its efficacy, practicality and power to promote emotional health and clear thinking are demonstrated time and again throughout the book. Countless professionals in primary care, education, psychology, psychiatry, psychotherapy, social services, immigration services, physiotherapy, criminology and even diplomacy now incorporate the human givens approach into the way they go about their work. This book shows why. Like a powerful lens 'An Idea in Practice' brings into focus rich insights about what is missing from society today and how a variety of talented people from diverse backgrounds are redressing this. It is full of moving stories, humour and deeply thought-provoking material. Written and edited by Joe Griffin and Ivan Tyrrell, who first coined the term `human givens', they and the other contributors reveal not only why people who use this approach are effecting change so quickly, but how others who are trying to transform distressed lives for the better can do so too. Editorial Reviews
Nursing Standard Magazine
5 stars: "This enjoyable book offers a good introduction to the Human Givens approach. The human givens school of psychotherapy is being recognised as a key shift in our understanding of biological, psychological and behavioural functioning.
I was intriguided by some chapter headings, particularly Richard Brook's 'When the lightbulb doesn't really want to change', and impressed by the candour, real life examples and humour. Helen Card's chapter, 'Uncommon Therapy', also had me engrossed. In many respects this text encourages the use of a truly eclectic approach to helping others."

Renewed my faith in human nature
I work with troubled young students and spent the weekend reading this book and wholeheartedly recommend it. To find people thinking about what our society needs, from government down to personal relationships, in a realistic way - and not just thinking about it, DOING IT! - is such a relief.
I think all therapists, doctirs, teachers, youth workers, and any other sincerely concerned person would find it enthralling. It's great to see, despite all the governmental clap-trap that gets in the way of progress, people getting on with it anyway.
The opening section on how politicians should learn from nature is brilliant.
