A wonderful film
This film really gets into the soul of Russia. A very violent society (today as well as earlier) where the same violent people also have a very caring side of their personalities. Russia is always about extremes.

The thief is about every day life in the late Stalin period. All the way down to the brands of cigarettes, type of cars, subjects of conversations, homes, architecture this film is true to all details.

Add to this a wonderful story, though a very sad one, and wonderful play by actors that look like real people. Not the usual Hollywood stuff using actors having had several tours below the knife of a plastic surgeon.

Though the story is a part of Russian reality, it also has universal apeal about love and broken illusions.

Highly recommended!

A wonderful and moving film
I loved this film: it was both funny and sad. The trials and tribulations of life experienced by a widow and her young son during the Stalinist era are the backdrop to the story. The young boy who plays the son gives a stunningly good performance with facial expressions and body language that appears so natural and believable. Recommended.
