us only - why?4
This series is only available on region 1 (US import).

Veronica is a wannabe PI who (not unlike Jessica Fletcher) manages to interfer in her classmates lives and families. Each episode is leading to the big show down in the final episode when all the outstanding issues are supposed to come together so we discover who is behind the bus crash, etc. Except that it doesn't make sense, in one case the accused was with little Miss Mars herself when she said that they committed a certain action, but it's only on second viewing that you see the faults with the end result.

According to the website it was just before the final episode was filmed that they got the green light for season 3 and changed the story at the last minute so that they did not loose the lead actor. Shame that they didn't role it over to the next season as it appeared as rushed as it obviously was.

Still worth watching though, but, please, ignore the last episode unless like me you're a glutten for punishment and want to go back over it to spot the problems with the killer.

--- UPDATE FOLLOWING A COMMENT MADE ABOUT THE ACCURACY OF THIS REVIEW ---

update made : 21 Nov 2008 18:26 due to a comment made by Lilith's Lantern, who has now changed her name to "enchanted" (14 Jan 09)

The set is Region 1 - if you have region free then you've done well - I congratulate you on your purchase - but the set I have purchased IS region 1 - only playable on region free players and my HP computers, it does NOT play on my other region 2 dvd players.

If you'd like to come over to my home and CALL ME A LIAR TO MY FACE then by all means come to my house, put my set into the dvd players and watch the "disc unknown" messages come up on the screen before the players kick out the discs. Then you can APOLOGISE TO ME.

If you check with the official website you will find that they were initially told that they would not be getting a 3rd season half way through the second series, they then went to the production company and network with a version which would lead to Veronica to joining the FBI and so changing the entire layout of the show.

It was this feeder idea that was given a "dependent" greenlight prior to the end of the second series, on the provision that they changed the murderer's identity - the network audience opinion surveys showed that the original character chosen was very popular with audiences.

They knew they WOULD get a third series, but the network penpushers would have final say on the story line and scripts. The storyline and the scripts were then produced and these that were given the final approval for filming. Production began in May of 2006.

The whole reason that the story of the killer became so convoluted is because the end was changed to make a different person the killer.

All of this information comes directly from the official Veronica Mars website and from the network website, including the fact that the final killer was changed, not once, not twice, but three times.

I don't make spurious comments in my reviews - I do my research so I get my facts right.

I would appreciate that apology, sometime soon would be nice, but I won't hold my breath.

--- I noted today that the comment made has now been altered

14 Jan 2009 - how sad is it that lilith's lantern/enchanted or whatever she wants to change it to has started going through all my reviews from the marking them as unhelpful - what a nasty vendictive thing to do, just because I didn't let her get away with calling me a liar and saying I lied in my review. How sad. This obviously shows what she is.

A Great Show Only Gets Stronger5
After solving her best friend's murder at the end of season 1, Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell) swore off detective work. She was going to relax and enjoy her senior year. In fact, she's got a boring job serving coffee. Just your typical high schooler.

Unfortunately, just when she thinks she's out, she's pulled back in. Firstly, on again off again friend Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring) is accused of killing a PCHer. Then best friend Wallace (Percy Daggs III) is part of the group of starting athletes accused of steroid use.

But worst of all is the bus crash. After a routine field trip, the bus the kids were riding in plunges over the side of a cliff, killing all on board. The rich kids had gotten off, so once again social status plays an issue. But worse yet, Veronica thinks it was intended to kill her. Was she the target or was there another sinister purpose?

This show started off with a strong first season and only improved with this one. The writing is as sharp as ever. Not only did the season long storylines keep me guessing from start to finish, but the individual mysteries that only last one episode were full of twists and turns as well. In addition to the great plotting, the dialog is fast moving. Veronica's sarcasm, both in dialog and her voice over narration consistently cracks me up every week.

Building on the great writing is equally strong acting. All of the actors take the wonderful words they are given and nail it every week. Kristen Bell receives lots of praise for her work here, and it is well deserved. She consistently hits all the peaks and valleys the role demands, and makes it look effortless. Equally praise worthy is Enrico Colantoni in his role as Veronica's Dad. Their scenes together are the heart of the show, and I love watching the two of them together.

While the first season set contained little in the way of extras, this one does include some. There are 22 minutes of deleted scenes, a gag reel, and two behind the scenes featurettes. All this is on top of wide screen picture and surround sound. If you are a fan of this show, this set is not to be missed.

And if you aren't a fan of this show, what's wrong with you? There's still time to get up to date on a great show and be ready to start season three when it premiers in a few weeks.

I'd give it 10 stars if I could.....5
I love this show, it's one of the few American programmes I've watched that credits it's audience with more that 2 brain cells, and while that may explain why it's struggling with viewing figures into it's third season over there, it really is fun, smart and sexy TV.

With guest appearances by Kevin Smith (Clerks, Jay and Silent Bob etc)and Joss Wheden and a great cast, a plot that actually requires that you pay attention, and cracking dialogue, this is an under-rated gem. The relationships are really well played, especially Veronica and her Dad, don't even get me started on Veronica and Logan.

I would recommend this to anyone who can deal with plots that deal with murder, drug-dealing and hormaonal teenagers (i.e. not your seven-year old cousin or your gran)

This is several hours of your life you'll be glad you spent in front of the box...
