"The Republic Fleet is here, we must withdraw."
Lego continue their Clone Wars releases in 2009 with set 8039: Venator Class Republic Attack Cruiser and while the scale is drastically reduced this is nonetheless a great replica of the backbone of the Republic Fleet.
Built using a similar construction framework to 2006's 6211 Imperial Star Destroyer, this predecessor is packed with play features and great detailing.
The forward module roof hinges open to reveal Palpatine's office inside. there is a rotating throne chair, control panel, storage box with a hologram of the Death Star and room for guards as well. On the outside there are laser cannon batteries, one on each side, and they can move up and down covering about 170 degrees of fire.
The aft section comprises several compartments. The hull plates on the wings hinge up through 90 degrees and the lower wing tips flatten out as well.
In the front there is a removable bomb bay drop pod. This contains 5 bombs and by turning the axle on the port side the cogs inside release the bombs onto your targets below.
Behind the bomb bay there is a turbolaser cannon which slides along a platform so it can be deployed on either side. It is built on a turntable so it covers about 280 degrees rotation and there are two red tipped flick missiles in the top of the gun. There is a seat on the side for a Clone Gunner.
The upper hull of each wing has 4 turbolaser emplacements which can rotate the full 360 degrees and the cannons can also be positioned through 180 degrees as well.
The upper middle section houses a carry handle which swings up and out of the forward part. behind it is the bridge which can actually be removed by pulling it out of the back. There is room inside for a Clone Pilot.
At the aft the end panel hinges down and there is an escape pod contained inside. The pod has an opening side canopy and retro thrusters that angle out through 100 degrees on either side.
You get five figures with the kit. Two are reissues, a Clone Pilot and a Clone Gunner. For the first time this kit includes Chancellor Palpatine, who has a great evil look on his face, and 2 Senate Clone Commando Troopers, decked out in their blue armour and each on has a black heavy assault rifle.
The Cruiser is 54 cm long (forward to aft hull), 30.5 cm wide (port to starboard wing tip) and 18 cm tall (lower hull to upper command hull).
The kit comprises 1125 pieces (not including figures, weapons, missiles and bombs), there are 10 decals to apply and construction time is about 90 minutes.
A brilliant capital ship and a definite must have for any Republic space fleet.
Great for grown-ups!
I bought this as a present for my son's 8th birthday. Thanks to Amazon, the first package which came with missing pieces was replaced quickly (we were lucky the missing pieces were at the early stages of the build-up)
My son loved it while building it, and he needed my help only in few occasions. That's the good part of it. The bad part is that this actually is not a toy. I guess it would be more suitable for collectors and/or children interested in putting it together and put it up for display, since every time my son tried to play with it (along with his other legos) he had trouble to keep it together.
frustrating and a lot of money
My son is 10 and used some birthday money to purchase this. It has been very frustrating for him as it breaks up very easily when you move it and is then very hard to repair. It is a lot of money. As regards the delivery, it came quickly and efficiently.
