Customer Reviews

Superb drum kit4
Having had the original Rock Band kit and not being able to play it due to the noise I was really hoping this would be a quieter kit to play. First few hits on the tom-toms I realised that the kit is not as quiet as I had hoped. However, the kit is soooo sensitive that it is possible to play very quietly by not hitting the pads so hard (something that's not natural to me).

First try with the drums and the cymbal pads were both not sensitive enough. The toms were good if a little too sensitive. Already had a midi cable (it doesn't have to be midi to USB, it can be midi to midi) so I downloaded the tuning software.

WOW! This kit is perfect now. I'm not the world's best drummer but 500 note streaks was something I could not have done on the old RB kit.

Pedal looks flimsy to start with but actually works really well, I replaced my RB pedal with a real metal base pedal so I was not expecting to like another plastic pedal.

Played the kit with RB1 and it works fine, although the game is not velocity sensitive on RB1 so the kit doesn't feel as responsive as it does in GHWT.

Only negative on the drums I can find is the mounting for the cymbals is a little flimsy and rattles a lot when struck, this was too noisy for me. Taped them and they are better now but it's not perfect. The stand is also a little flimsy.

The guitar is great, only negative is that I personally think the touch sensitive neck is just a gimmick. Apart from that best guitar I have used in a rhythm game.

The microphone is fine, works perfectly.

The game is probably the weakest part of the package, hence not 5 stars from me. Although there is this huge set list there are some hateful songs in there mixed in with some classics. The fact that in career mode you are forced to play through them all without any chance to avoid "bad" songs is unforgivable. The game is supposed to be fun! Not a chore. Still the fun songs go some way to make up for the dross.

Will be getting RB2 solus to go with this kit, I do think that's the best combination as I really don't trust the RB drums. Apart from having to get used to pads in different places you really can't go wrong with the GHWT drum kit.

Problems with the drums4
Most other reviewers have given pretty positive accounts of the game itself and most people thinking of buying it will know what to expect, so I won't go over it all again in this review.

No one else has mentioned the sensitivity problems relating to the drum kit so maybe it only affects early models, as Activision have suggested. However, if anyone else is having problems when using the drums - either too sensitive or not sensitive enough - then Activision have provided a fix.

If you check out Activisions Customer Support page activision.com/support and follow the Guitar Hero link, you will find out how to download the drum tuning software and obtain a free USB-MIDI interface to connect the drums to your laptop. You can then set the sensitivity for each drum and pedal individually. When contacting Activision you will need to email them the serial number of your kit.

I haven't tried it yet so can't comment on it's effectiveness.

27/11/08. I have now tried the fix and it did not work for the red drum. I am returning the bundle to Amazon for a replacement.

29/11/08. Replacement received from Amazon, new drums are a slightly different design, and work perfectly. Thanks Amazon!
