The One Minute Manager is a book that has sold a staggering 12 million copies in 27 languages and has become the world's most popular management method. Unfortunately, it is easy for a One Minute Manager to be so successful in every way that he or she forgets one important thing: to look after number one. This book, published now for the first time outside the USA, tells the story of a One Minute Manager who is so much in demand that he eats on the run, doesn't take time to exercise, and never puts himself, his family or his well-being top of his list of priorities. He soon discovers that his life is out of balance and that success in business is endangering his health. For all those busy, achieving people with overcrowded schedules, this useful blueprint shows how to manage stress and keep healthy. By following four important strategies for balancing a complicated life, everyone can get their lives into proper perspective. One Minute Manager Balances Work and Life
Great book, easy and quick to read with lots of thought provoking ideas. A must read for busy people.
Not quite what I had expected
The book was a quick and easy read but it felt a little formulaic. Some of the narrative seemed unreal. I felt it was just an advocate of how to get exercise into a routine activity and how this would be good for you rather than considering how one makes decisions about the balance between work and other areas of life.
Less about work-life and more about Personal Health
This book is all about personal fitness and ensuring that it has the importance in your life that it deserves. There is maybe nothing revolutionary in this book as the past decade has seen a shift towards awareness of health and the implications of not being 'fit'.
The book is unusual in that it is the One Minute Manager himself who is on a journey of discovery. That said the journey that he does on is in a similar vein to the ones travelled in the rest of the series. The lessons are clearly marked and repeated where deemed necessary.
One of the interesting elements is a short self-evaluation piece that is a good reminder to take ourselves seriously.
On the counter point, some people may find this a little basic and cover information that is not new on them. Some of the lessons that are set out here are well-known and 'health' is rooted in the public consciousness.
But maybe this is where the usual magic of the series comes into being. How often are we good at starting something but comprimising on it when something else gets in the way? And how often do we forget about the importance of looking after ourselves when there are many priorities in our lives?
