How to be a good friend to someone? - Buy them this book
DK should rename this 'Life's survival handbook'. This book neatly and succinctly tells you the same corner stones of psychology and health best practice that many so-called gurus preach in expensive seminars simply dressing it up with new jargon or that hundreds of books and magazine articles deal with. It covers many situations from divorce to work stress. When my friends are down I have been able to make a real difference in helping them understand their problems and what to do to turn things around by lending them this book. I do have to crow bar it back from their clutches though! Guess that makes it the perfect gift too from a caring friend but I'd never part with my own copy.
An accessible and useful book.
This book is broken down into three sections. To paraphrase these are: 1. How am I showing stress? 2. Why am I stressed? 3. How do I stop being so stressed?
It takes you through the steps of stress management in bitesize pieces. Despite this ease of access, the book covers a lot of ground (for greater detail other sources may be necessary). This enables you to look at all of the many areas of your life that may be causing you stress and prevent fixation on one specific area.
The book contains various quizzes and practical steps to take both physically and mentally.
One of the best self help books
This is a no-nonsense, jargon-free excellent resource to enable everyone to get a little bit more happiness and control in their lives. What attracted me to the book was the publisher - Dorling Kindersley as I always find their books packed with information, with little fluff and clearly strucutred with a wonderful ease of access.
There is a section for everyone, at every stage in one's life. So the book has excellent breadth too; for example sections on improving relationships and the sources of stress such as change and bereavement. There could be a bit more on meditation & aromatherapy - there is information on relaxation and exercise. There could even be a suggested 'time table' for a day - and exercises to complete, instead of just questionnaires.
