All clever stuff
I recently saw a Max Miller act and it reminded me of how good he was. I had one of his CDs and for Christmas I got his Blue Book which is supposed to be all his jokes.
If you have heard the recordings you will appreciate the book.
The jokes are not actually that funny but it was all in the delivery he was pure music hall as it was all double entendre and no rude words.
He would add so many asides that would get a laugh that the punch line was irrelvant as the audience would be wetting themselves. he would play up to the ladies but dress in an outrageous fashion and give asides such as what if I am? thereby suggesting he might be gay.
Treat yourself and listen to some of his works. Then when you read the book you can hear him telling the jokes
There is one in the book which is controversial as there is conflicting views as to whether he actually told it but it was very rude for its day as it used a clever double entendre.
He claims he was going along a narrow path on a mountain side and a naked lady came to towards him.
The punchline was I didnt know whether to block her passage or toss myself off
The would be an innoucuos joke today as we now rely on swearing to tell jokes.
A classic joke book and there will never be another.
