DVD Description
Re: Joyce! is Maureen Lipman’s amusing and affectionate tribute to English comedienne Joyce Grenfell. Star of the English stage and screen, Grenfell’s style of humour was simple and charming but also sophisticated. In this special recording of the stage show, Maureen Lipman guides us through the life and times of Joyce Grenfell. It is not only a salute to the skills of Joyce Grenfell but also to the craft of one of Britain’s finest comediennes – Maureen Lipman. Re: Joyce! includes many of Grenfell’s best-loved songs and sketches including a wicked send-up of the power politics of the Women’s Institute and probably her most famous – The Nursery School. Maureen Lipman’s tribute show ran for six months in London’s West End, opening at the Fortune Theatre before transferring to the Vaudeville.
Synopsis
Joyce Grenfell is perhaps best remembered for her comedy roles in the ST. TRINIAN'S series, but was a great comedy performer of wider acclaim. Maureen Lipman's celebration of Grenfell's career and talent took the form of a successful stageshow, incorporating many of her best loved songs, monologues and sketches including perhaps her most famous one "The Nursery School." This special recording of the show brings to a wider audience, the joy of Grenfell's hilarious legacy and of Maureen Lipman's talent for impersonation.

Lipman at her best
As a long-time aficionado of Joyce Grenfell, I have been eagerly awaiting the release of this DVD. The performance from Maureen Lipman is a perfect tribute to a wonderful lady; somehow Lipman manages to convey not only the tremendous talent (both funny and at times very moving, as evidenced in 'First Flight) of Joyce Grenfell, but also her humanity and spirituality. A 'must' for all Grenfell fans.
Re:Joyce over Maureen
I was too young to appreciate Miss Grenfell's work while she was alive, but this production brings her back to us again. As her dear husband Reggie said, after seeing the show,
"It was lovely to see Joyce again!"
Maureen Lipman's portrayal is sensitive as well as being original, confirming her as one of our best character actresses. Her talent is so much deeper than comedy. The pathos evoked as we see Joyce's star shine brightly then dance away is astounding. I defy you to remain dry-eyed.
I would recommend this without reservation, if you are a fan of either lady, or you just want good entertainment, well-presented and acted with an ease that shows how much effort Miss Lipman put into her performance.
Maureen, Thanks!
Pete
Familiar Beattie gives us something to Re:Joyce about
