Customer Reviews

warm late-romantic music4
Von Zemlinski is another of those Austro-Germanic composers who were driven out of their home country by the Nazis (like Korngold and Weigl) and were subsequently largely forgotten. Like Korngold's and Weigl's, Zemlinsky's music is firmly rooted in tonality and certainly these two symphonies attest to that. The first symphony is a very warm, youthful work (written when Zemlinsky was 20), with wonderful orchestration, but still very much in the Brahms-Bruckner tradition (Brahms was present at the work's premiere in 1892). This is the symphony's first recording.
The second symphony, written some five years later, is slightly more modern, but still a very warm and lyric work.
James Conlon and the Cologne Gürzenich Orchestra are something of Zemlinsky experts having recorded nine of his works. Conlon was awarded the Zemlinsky Prize in 1999, so the music probably couldn't have been in better hands.
Warmly recommended, certainly at this price.
