Mystique and Northern charm
I don't get much out of Sibelius orchestral works. But his Lieder are among the finest music in the genre written in the 20th century. These are emotionally complex, intense works. Who better to present them than Soile Isokoski alongside the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Leif Segerstam?
Isokoski's soprano is incredibly clean and pure, her singing uncluttered and never artificially dramatizing. Both the mystique and the Northern charm of these pieces are excellently conveyed. Also, she is at home in both languages (Finnish and Swedish), which supports the natural flow.

This is a hybrid CD, it offers truly outstanding sound quality on an ordinary CD-player, but can also be played on SACD-players.
The booklet offers 5 pages of tightly written, small font information on the works and the performers, in a variety of languages including, of course, English.

This truly is a must have for lovers of the orchestral Lied genre. Few composers since Mahler have reached such heights!
