A frank and engaging tale
Synopsis
"I have long wanted to write a book about my life and the extraordinary years I spent with my husband Howard Marks. I feel now is the time. I want to write it from a woman's perspective and describe what it was like to be married to such a charismatic drug smuggler." - Judy Marks Howard. Mark's story has passed into hippie folklore. At one time, the world's then most wanted man had 43 aliases, 89 phone lines and 25 registered companies. Thanks to the technical brilliance of his networking skills, it was estimated that he was trafficking as much as a tenth of all the marijuana smoked in the world. But this is only half the story. Intimately involved throughout was Mark's wife Judy. From living the high life hobnobbing with movie stars and euro trash to mixing it with the IRA and CIA, then the long, increasingly desperate years on the run, "Mr Nice and Mrs Marks" is about the exhilaration of their criminal life and the hell of not knowing what's happening when your husband stops telling you the truth. Now, for the first time, Judy tells her own side of the tale.

Not so nice!!
Having read Mr Nice a few years ago, which I found very enjoyable, I decided to give this one a go. The book was interesting and well written but shows Howard Marks to be not quite as 'nice' as he comes across in his own book.
Unlike the thoughts of some other reviewers, Judy does not to me come across as compassionate and warm at all! She has never worked a day in her life, preferring it would seem, to live off her husband's criminal earnings.
She does love her kids and tries to do her best for them and at one part in the book, describes her disgust at finding that friends of her husband had hidden drugs in her house putting herself and the children in danger. This struck me as ironic, given that she expresses no shame at all in any part of the book, at living it up off the proceeds of the very same drugs.
She describes her hatred of one FBI law enforcer who seemed to make it his life's work to chase down both her and her husband and was eventually the one who managed to get both her and Howard the jail terms they served. She saw this man as bitter and prepared to do anything 'dirty' to get them both in jail. However towards the end of the book, she describes how Howard continued to deal in drugs, knowing that they were under surveillance from the FBI and it comes across in the book that they were both simply sticking two fingers up at the law authorities, saying 'catch me if you can!'
So it does not come across as surprising, the determination of the FBI to get them jailed and out of harms way.
I did enjoy this book and would recommend it (even though it means more contributions to the coffers of these two!!) It will be interesting to see if any other reviewers see Judy Marks in the same way as I do.
good fast paced read
Having read Mr Nice a few years ago, I found this book to give a refreshingly new perspective. Written by Judy, Howard's wife for over three decades, it offers a unique insight into life with the infamous marijuana smuggler. It is well written with some interesting lines 'the walls, stained in time and crime' been a particular favourite of mine.
It covers the hi's and lows of their life together. The last few chapters been particularly moving. A definite must read.
Loved it
I could not put it down until I had finished the book, very gripping. It made me laugh and cry. After reading Mr Nice it is great to see his life from a different angle. I love the style in the way in it written. Throughly enjoyed and would recommend for any one has read Mr Nice (loved Mr Nice too.)
