Synopsis
When Eragon finds a polished stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy; perhaps it will buy his family meat for the winter. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon soon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself. Overnight his simple life is shattered and he is thrust into a perilous new world of destiny, magic and power. With only an ancient sword and the advice of an old storyteller for guidance, Eragon and the fledgling dragon must navigate the dangerous terrain and dark enemies of an Empire ruled by a king whose evil knows no bounds. Not new ... but not cheated4
I chose this book as I was missing a regular instalment of elves, dwarves and dragons ...Having read Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter & Northern Lights over the past couple of years, I didn't find much new in Eragon. However, it is a fast, engaging and straightforward read: partly because the story doesn't have the complexity of the LOTR or the innovation of Northern Lights. In some points, the sentence construction is a little unusual and it should have been possible to name people and place without the similarities to LOTR. However, at no point did I feel cheated by this. Eragon is a good story, told well.

Eragon- its all there!4
i personly loved eragon. farm boy turned dragon rider. elves and dwarves. a long journey to reach his destiny. a best friend and a love interest. saving the world from an evil and powerful dictator. this book has it all. the characters may not appesr to be original but they are in a completly new setting and it works. i recomended this book to all my friends and those who enjoy fantasy/adventure loved it. the inheritance cycle is a must read for all fantasy fans out there.

Fantastic!5
One of the best books I have ever read. Incredibly engaging, as fantasy is brought to life as though reality. There are also some amazing characters and origional ideas.
Others have compared Eragon to Star Wars, but I don't really think that they are similar at all - yes, the sense of action, adventure, new and exciting is there in both, but in Eragon the characters are brought to life as complex individuals, and these individuals are totaly different people to those in star wars. Although both plots are subtle and intriguing, they are actually, in content, completely dis-similar. I agree, however, that most authors get ideas from other books and films, but usually these are only a starting point and are developed into something completely new, and often better, than the origional.)
To get the best out of the books, I would strongly recomend the next one, Eldest, which is in many ways even more subtle and well written than Eragon, answering a number of the questions posed in Eragon and with a fantastic twist at the end (which is utterly believable as a lot then makes sense). Overall, both are a must-read!
